The leather factory under the 1 District 1 Factory (1D1F) policy of the Akufo-Addo led government would be made operational as soon as authorities are able to procure the right machinery for its operations.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East, the MCE for Bolgatanga explained that there has been some initial difficulty in acquiring the right equipment for the conversion of animal hides into leather.

He said attention has been turned to Burkina Faso in an attempt to get the needed equipment. Once that is done, the 60 youth who have been selected to run the place would spring into action.

Mr. Asanga was optimistic that the strategic siting of the factory next to the abattoir would allow the factory easy access to raw materials. He added that other arrangements would be made with other abbatoirs in the region so that some animals skins would be transported to the factory.

He was convinced that competitive prices would be offered to the butchers to prevent the skins from being consumed as food.

Meanwhile, the Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu has said the government’s 1 District 1 Factory (1D1F) initiative is effectively working in the region.

The 1D1F initiative was introduced by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led government on August 25, 2017. According to the policy, every District across the country was to benefit from a factory.

According to the government, this will change the nature of Ghana’s economy from one which is dependent on the import of finished goods and the export of raw materials to one which is focused on manufacturing value addition and export of processed goods.
