School for Life (SfL) and its consortium partners – Ghana Developing Communities Association (GDCA) and YEfL-Ghana have organised an educational accountability forum in the Talensi district of the Upper East region after a successful implementation of the CLEAR project in the district.

The Citizen-Led Action for Educational Accountability and Responsiveness in Ghana (CLEAR) project was implemented last year by School for Life and its consortium partners in 10 communities in the district.  The main objective of the CLEAR project is to help contribute to access to quality basic education for children in deprived areas by strengthening transparency and accountability. Forum held yesterday aimed to provide an opportunity for citizens and education duty bearers to interact and answer questions from citizens.

Speaking to A1 News at the Talensi district assembly in Tongo, the district field Officer of the CLEAR project, Saidu Musah Akugri highlighted some of the many educational setbacks in their operational communities in the district which he and his team vigorously advocated for them to be addressed. He appreciated the level of commitment duty bearers are reacting to the challenges they have identified so far.

“This is an opportunity created for our citizen groups such as, Youth groups, Women groups, SMCs, PAs that we are working with them in the communities to have interaction with duty bearers in education in the district that is the district assembly and the Ghana education service. So the citizens will get the opportunity to ask them questions to respond and listen to issues concerning education in communities in the district. So the forum is an opportunity created by School For Life, for this interaction to happen so that issues that are affecting the schools in these communities the duty bearers will get to know and address them” He said.

On his part Cheebazaa Solomon, one of the two who were trained as community Journalists told A1 News some of the challenges schools in the communities are facing are similar which include inadequate furniture infrastructure deficit inadequate Teachers among others.

The forum was graced by representatives from the Talensi district assembly and Talensi education directorate. Also joining the forum was the Talensi Youth Parliament.
