This website reported recently that the NDC PC for Chiana-Paga was under investigation over the alleged assault of an NPP agent during the just-ended voter registration. Nikyema Billa Alamzy, the Chiana-Paga Constituency Parliamentary Candidate for the National Democratic Congress in the Upper East Region. Mr. Alamzy was accused of physically assaulting an agent of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the recently concluded limited voter registration exercise.

The incident occurred during the voter registration process, where tensions ran high among the agents of the two political parties as they closely monitored the exercise. According to the NPP agent involved, Nicholas Dido Kaba, the NDC was attempting to register unqualified individuals who were not residents of the Chiana-Paga constituency. He added that the NDC’s agents also tried to register underage individuals, and he could not stand by and watch, so he confronted the alleged process.

As the confrontation escalated between the agents of the two parties, Mr. Alamzy is said to have arrived at the scene. Without much information at hand, according to Mr. Dido, Mr. Alamz slapped him.

At the time of the initial report, the matter had been reported to the Paga police command, and an investigation was underway.

However, in response to the allegations on A1 Radio, Nikyema Billa Alamzy’s handlers  vehemently denied the assault, labelling it a calculated stunt by the NPP to tarnish his reputation in the area.

According to the Deputy Communications Officer of the NDC for the area, Akoriwo Dennis, the NPP agent fabricated the assault story to gain sympathy and divert attention from the alleged voter registration irregularities. He added that the PC was never at the scene at the time of the arguments between the supporters of the two parties and hence could not have assaulted someone, particularly the alleged victim.

Speaking on the same platform about the issue today, Tuesday, October 10, 2023, Nicholas Dido Kaba explained that the NDC had begun going around with leaders of the party, begging the NPP not to pursue the case at the law court.

“… when we went for a break and came back, the party came to apologise. When the party came to apologise, the guy [PC], couldn’t say what he did so we disagreed on it. He [the NDC PC] went to the father of our chairman’s house. The man didn’t tell us what he went there for but he wanted peace and didn’t want us to take the matter to court. One of our constituency patrons, who is a friend of Alamzy, his name is Adams, he called us on the same issue. He [Adams] went to Robert, our former Parliamentary Candidate and Robert met us 3 or 4 times before Monday.”

Mr. Dido Kaba explained that at a recent meeting with the police, the constituency chairman of the NDC spoke up and apologise on behalf of the PC.

“The chairman said he has something to say. He said he has come to apologise to us. [He said] whatever happened to us, we should forgive them and we should allow peace to prevail. That time, Robert was there and also begging us and apologising. Since he is our senior brother, we cannot say we wouldn’t listen to him,” he said.

Meanwhile, the handlers of the PC, who were scheduled to appear on the Day Break Upper East Show to present their side, failed to show up. All attempts to contact the handlers of the NDC PC or the communication team of the NDC have been unsuccessful.
