Editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide Newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako has apologized for describing chiefs who endorse presidents as unwise.

The veteran journalist said on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo, Wednesday that “Any chief who has gone out there to categorically endorse a president is not wise. No wise chief speaks that way.”

His comments triggered some controversy with some describing it as on insult to the revered chiefs who endorsed President Mahama’s presiential bid.

But speaking on Joy FM’s news analysis programme News File, Mr. Baako explained that his comments were never meant to insult or denigrate any chief but was just describing the improper acts of some chiefs which brings the chieftaincy institution into disrepute.

According to him, his assertion is synonymous to saying that any chief who endorses a president lacks wisdom which is supposed to be a significant quality of a chief and also in contravention of the constitution.

That notwithstanding, Mr. Baako apologized to persons whose sensibilities and sentitivities were hurt by his description of the actions of the said chiefs.

“First of all i did not single out any particular chief but ofcourse some chiefs have been talking so i expect people to have been looking at those chiefs, lets be honest. If people think my language and choice of word, the kind of language i used were offensive and it hurts their sensibilities and sentitivities then i sincerely and humbly apologize for the choice of word” he said.

Article 276 of the 1992 Constitution also states that a chief shall not take part in active party politics; and any chief wishing to do so and seeking election to Parliament shall abdicate his stool or skin.
