The National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by the Member of Parliament for the Bolgatanga Central constituency, Isaac Adongo, has embarked on a cleanup exercise in the Bolgatanga municipality.
The initiative focused on clearing and evacuating mixed waste from various collection points across the township. The Bolgatanga Central MP explained that he was moved to action after receiving complaints from residents in the Atulbabisi community about the unhygienic conditions around the dog market.
“I received complaints from my constituents about fields of waste engulfing several parts of the township. This became evident when I visited Atulibabisi because, normally, when campaigns start, we go to the grassroots of the party. During one of these visits, I scheduled a meeting with a section of Atulibabisi, and the meeting was held not far from a refuse dump.”
“The concerns raised in Atulibabisi were that they had tried their best to get the municipal assembly to assist them in evacuating the waste, and I promised them I would handle it. So, the next day, I brought equipment to the site, and we cleaned up the whole area. This is also a market center, so the filth nearby was not hygienic, and we decided to address it. However, during the cleanup, more demands for assistance arose from different parts of the constituency.”
According to Mr. Adongo, the evacuation of waste across the town alone cost him over GHS 70,000, even without including the cleanup exercise. The contribution, he noted, underscores his dedication to improving the lives of residents in the area. The Bolgatanga Central MP also accused the municipal assembly and the regional coordinating council of attempting to prevent him from carrying out the exercise.
“We had challenges. I am aware that the municipal assembly was not comfortable with me taking this initiative, even though I was spending my own money. Up to this point, the evacuation alone has cost me over GHS 70,000, from my own pocket—not public funds. Yet, they were not happy with it.”
“In fact, we rented some of the equipment from Zoomlion, and they reported the Zoomlion representative all the way to the head office, complaining that she was renting the equipment to me. I wasn’t using the equipment for private business but rather to evacuate waste—a responsibility of the assembly—so I decided to step in and help,” he said.
Mr. Adongo urged the municipal assembly to continue with the sanitation efforts he had started and to prioritize them.
