Bongo: Modern Irrigation Technology Units Established

The Ministry of Agriculture together with a Spanish company, Incatema consult have established two modern irrigation technology units in Bongo District of the Upper East Region.

Two communities in the district, Tanko-om and Nayiri have boreholes drilled and mechanized with water tanks and irrigation kits installed respectively to provide water for farmers to engage in a yearlong farming.

This new farming technique hopes to avert consequences of agriculture production due to erratic and poor rainfall patterns. The initiative will go a long way to boost the rural economy of the district while employing individuals in and outside the selected communities who might have travelled to urban areas in search of non-existent jobs.

Principal agriculture engineer at the ministry, Patrick Ohene Aboagye said the Bongo and another project at Mion in the Northern region follows a 5.2 million Euro contract signed by the ministry and Incatema consult company to establish irrigation technology transfer units in Ghana.

“The purpose is to serve as a demonstration models for irrigation showcasing to farmers the new modern irrigation techniques,” he stated.

Country Manager of Incateme, Daniel Fernandez stated that training has been given to farmers and staff of the agric ministry as part of the project. The project which lasted 6 months to complete in Bongo district according to the country manager has a meteor station to provide accurate weather information to farmers.

“This specific meteor station is one of the most accurate meteor stations we have in Ghana. The MoFA staff can use and provide the data to different institutions,” Mr. Fermandez said.

Bongo District Director of Agriculture, Drah Edgar said the underground water system will engage farmers and most importantly women in vegetable farming for livelihood sustainability. According to him the project for the start will engage about 200 people in the two projects sites. The meteor system he added will assist farmers to identity a kind of crop to plant and time to plough based on the weather patterns.
