The Assemblyman for Atulbabisi, Aaron Achingebeh, is calling for urgent intervention to address growing piles of rubbish at the Bolgatanga Jubilee Park, warning that the situation is a health and environmental concern for residents and visitors.
Mr. Achingebeh, speaking to Seidu Mutawakil on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, said the park — intended to serve as a major recreational and public-event space — is increasingly becoming a dumping ground for waste, including refuse deposited by long-distance drivers who arrive in Bolgatanga.
He said drivers transporting passengers from cities such as Kumasi and Accra frequently stop at the Jubilee Park and dump waste generated during their journeys, adding that the lack of proper supervision has worsened sanitation conditions.
“Passengers arrive and drivers go straight to the Jubilee Park. The rubbish they generate on the journey is offloaded there,” he said. “When they feel like defecating, where do you think they will do it?”
According to Mr. Achingebeh, the park lacks adequate sanitation facilities and proper management, allowing waste to accumulate despite its central role in community activities.
He said the Assembly should take responsibility for ensuring regular cleaning and security at the park but noted that accountability remains unclear.
Achingebeh said revenue is collected from park users by the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, but it is unknown how those funds are managed.
“The Assembly takes the revenue,” he said. “But no one can tell whether it is yearly or monthly. As a representative of the people, I still cannot get answers.”
He also raised concerns about poor working conditions for sanitation workers assigned to the park, mentioning that one cleaner who had worked for more than a year died recently, leaving her family unsupported.
The Assemblyman said he has repeatedly raised the matter at the municipal level and plans to continue escalating it.
“I will not stop here,” he said, noting that he intends to raise the issue again before the Municipal Chief Executive and the Regional Minister.
Mr. Achingebeh said he expects authorities to apologize to the people of Atulbabisi and take concrete action to maintain the park, which he described as a shared community asset that should benefit the entire municipality.
He called for immediate provision of cleaners, improved waste-collection systems and enforcement to prevent indiscriminate dumping at the venue.
