The Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Navrongo Central Constituency, Alhassan Abubakari Suwaidu, has defended the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over the arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye, rejecting claims that the action was politically motivated.
Suwaidu, speaking on Day Break Upper East on A1 Radio on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, said EOCO was acting within its mandate and that investigations involving political figures should not be interpreted as persecution.
His comments followed criticism from Navrongo Central New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Secretary Moses Amoah, who questioned the manner in which Aboagye was arrested at the Accra International Airport.
Aboagye, Director of Communications for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2028 presidential campaign team, was arrested upon arrival in Ghana as part of ongoing EOCO investigations.
Suwaidu said EOCO Executive Director Raymond Archer was only carrying out his official responsibilities.
“Raymond Archer is simply executing the mandate that has been given to him as EOCO boss, yet the NPP wants to portray it as political persecution,” he said.
He argued that investigators had reasons to arrest Aboagye after discovering that he had travelled outside Ghana while investigations were ongoing.
“The documents clearly indicate that they later realised he had left the country without prior notice. When they became aware he was returning, they alerted the appropriate authorities to effect his arrest,” he said.
Suwaidu stressed that an arrest does not amount to a conviction, adding that suspects have legal rights throughout the investigation process.
“Arrest does not mean a death warrant. The law provides rights for every suspect,” he said.
He also explained that Aboagye’s arrival on a Sunday contributed to delays in completing some official procedures.
“Sunday is not a normal working day. If you arrive on Sunday while investigators are looking for you, naturally the process will continue the next working day,” he said.
The arrest of Aboagye has generated political debate, with the NPP accusing the government of targeting opposition figures, while authorities maintain that EOCO’s investigations are being conducted in accordance with the law.
