GES ‘worried’ about poor BECE performance in Northern Region

0

Reverend Kofi Amofa Odaatu, the Northern Regional Examinations Officer of Ghana Education Service (GES), has expressed worry over continuous falling standards of Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) in public schools in the region.

He said for the past ten years, public basic schools in the Northern Region with North East and Savannah Regions inclusive, have not performed up to 50 per cent pass rate in the BECE.

The persistent poor performance was blamed on early registration of students, wholesale promotion, inadequate supervision, insufficient parental control and growing indiscipline on the part of students, teachers and parents.

Rev Odaatu made this known during a presentation on BECE performance from 2014 to 2018 at a stakeholder accountability forum on education on Monday in Tamale.

The meeting was organized by Youth Empowerment for Life (YEfL) in collaboration with the Northern Regional Youth Network and funded by OXFAM.

Students, youth networks and groups, staff of GES and several other stakeholders participated in the session that aimed at eliciting ideas on how to help improve falling standards of education in the Northern Region.

From 2014 to 2018, the Region performed below the national average, recording 19.56 per cent pass in 2015 and 37.24 per cent pass in 2018, as the lowest and highest performance within the periods.

According to the statistics presented by Rev Odaatu, in 2015, out of 36,536 students who sat for the examination, only 7,147, representing, 19.56 per cent passed within aggregate 6 to 30.

In 2018, with 42,623 students who sat for the BECE, only 15,874 representing 37.24 per cent passed within aggregate 6 to 30.

Rev Odaatu urged parents to help monitor their children’s education, ensure improved supervision and provide capacity building support for staff and establish effective collaboration with stakeholders.

Alhaji Mohammed Seidu Issah Abah, the Regional Deputy Director of GES in charge of Human Resource Management and Development, said strategic monitoring systems were being put in place to help improve education quality and performance in schools.

He urged headmasters, teachers and District Education Directorates to effectively perform their duties in accordance with the dictates of the national and district Annual District Operational Plans (ADOPs).

He urged parents to be responsible for monitoring their children’s education and encouraged the school children to be disciplined and committed to their studies.

Madam Jawol Vera Magan, the YEfL called for collective efforts to help beef up the quality of education, invest and safeguard the future of Ghanaian children.

She said young people who lacked literacy were generally likely to make bad decisions and also become irresponsible in future.

The participants advised students to change their attitude towards studies and urged parents and teachers among other stakeholders to help monitor activities of students in a bid to curb falling standards of education in the regions.

Lawyer AAbraham Amaliba

The National Director of the Legal Team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lawyer Abraham Amaliba has applauded management and staff of A1 Radio for their efforts in delivering compelling content in their programming that can compete the southern radio stations in Ghana.

According to the Lawyer Amaliba, A1 Radio has demonstrated its commitment to serving the people of the Upper East Region and beyond.

He said, “Credit should always be given to those who deserved it, and I must say that A1 Radio has merited such from me. Despite the Radio being in the Upper East Region, it is matching those in the Southern sector in terms of content, and constantly updating its readers with current affairs both in and out of the region.”

He spoke on the holidays edition A1 Radio’s flagship programme, ‘DayBreak Upper East hosted by Gifty Amoshie on Tuesday 31st December 2019.

The Lawyer, however, expressed the view organizers of various awards for Journalists and media personalities in the country including the Radio and Television Personality Awards have centered on media personalities in the Southern sector leaving the hardworking ones in the Upper East and West Regions.

He said, “How can you say you are organizing awards for all journalists in the country and you end up boxing Journalists from the five Savannah Regions together and call it Northern Region award? It doesn’t make sense, and I think it is time organizers of such awards began to look into it.”

In spite of his observation, Mr. Amaliba cautioned journalists in the five Savannah Regions of the North not to be moved by awards, rather, continue to work hard as their hard works have contributed to the peace and security for the country.

Tongraan tells politicians; “Respect Northern Chiefs when paying courtesy calls on them”

Tongraan Kugbilsong-Nanlebegtang

The Overlord of the Tongo Traditional Area in the Upper East Region, Tongraan Tongraan Kugbilsong Nanlebegtang, has asked Ghanaian politicians to usually show dignity to chiefs in the northern part of the country whenever they intend to pay courtesy calls on them.

According to the Paramount Chief, the manner in which politicians usually ambush northern chiefs at their various palaces all in the name of visiting them without giving prior notices is insulting to the chieftaincy title and should not be accepted nor practiced.

A1 Radio’s live broadcast from Tongranan’s palace at Tongo

“How can you visit me when I have no prior knowledge of your coming? Excuse me to say, but, I don’t think most of these politicians will not do same to the Southern Chiefs anytime they want to visit them [Chiefs]. That level of respect needs to be there.”

Team A1 with Tongraan

Tongraan Kubilsong Nalebegtan made this comment at his palace on Wednesday January 1, 2020 in a live broadcast of A1 Radio’s flagship programme, DayBreak Upper East from his palace at Tongo.

In his New Year message, he appealed to the sons and daughters of the Talensi Traditional Area as well as the people of the Upper East Region who are in the diaspora to begin setting the agenda of coming home to invest.

This, he said will help the region to gain the full potential of development that those at home need to make life better.

He also called on the youth to be conscious and continue to portray the culture of the land as culture helps in identifying one’s uniqueness.

The programme was hosted by Gifty Kayla Amoshe and produced by Moses Apiah and Emmanuel Aboagye.

Mr. Emmanuel Tia Nabila (in smock) presenting the items to a NADMO official

The Anglican Diocesan Development and Relief Organisation (ADDRO), a non-profit organization of the Anglican Church has appealed to citizens to preserve and protect the environment in order to avert flooding in the country.

The Upper East Region and for that matter other regions records perennial floods almost every year due to torrential rains.

But as a remedy to curb it, ADDRO is advocating for attitudinal change in managing the environment by way of planting trees to avert climate change infestation.

Executive Director of ADDRO for the Upper East Region, Emmanuel Tia Nabila made this clarion call when the organization with funding support from the Episcopal Relief and Development donated some relief items to 213 flood victims in Chuchuliga sub-district of the Builsa North District.

“The flooding and the drought we are seeing are manifestations of variation in our climate. Some of the climate variability we are experiencing now are caused by our activities as human beings. We are destroying the vegetation, we are polluting the water bodies and we are not disposing our rubbish very well. Let us begin to plant trees, let us begin to protect the environment”.

The items were bags of maize, bags of rice, key soap, bathing soap, bags of gari and second hand cloth.

Mr. Nabila who appealed to the beneficiaries to use the items for the benefit indicated that the selection of Chuchuliga Sub-district is in line with a program his outfit is implementing in the area.

“It is because we are implementing a project which is the early childhood development project. It is also an expansion of a program we have been implementing over the years known as Integrated Community Case Management for malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia. Our target is to help vulnerable group of the society to get a better living and to develop to become responsible in society” he stated.

Upper East Women endorses Pwalugu Multi-purpose dam as a panacea to end rural-urban migration

0

The sod-cutting ceremony held last week in Pwalugu to pave way for a smooth start of a $993 million multipurpose dam project located in the Upper East region and North East region respectively will be a game changer to residents of these regions when completed.

The match awaited project is about to start as government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by President Nana Akufo-Addo has broken the grounds for it to start in the soonest.

The Pwalugu multi-purpose dam when completed, according to the New Patriotic Party Women wing and women in the Upper East Region will be “a sustainable solution of rural-urban migration of women and children in the region”.

In a press statement copied to A1 News, Upper East Regional Women’s Organizer of the NPP, Georgina Ayamba while thanking the president and the current government for such a life changing project said the Pwalugu multi-purpose dam has come at a right time “to save the masses from the neglect by the previous NDC government”.

Mrs. Ayamba on behalf of women in the Upper East Region also thanked the president for cutting sod for construction of the Rock Estates affordable housing project, located also in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region as an indication of “President Nana Addo’s commitment to bridging the development gap between the Northern and Southern Ghana”.

The NPP Regional Women’s Organizer while calling on residents of the beneficiary regions to make good use of the projects when completed entreated voters especially “women to vote massively to retain the Nana Addo led government in 2020 for the prosperity of the Upper East Region and Ghana at large”.

Below is the full statement:

For immediate release
7th December, 2019

THANK YOU NANA ADDO FOR THE MULTIPURPOSE DAM AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING

The New Patriotic Party Women wing and the women of the Upper East Region wish to express our sincerest gratitude to President Nana Addo NPP led government for the kick-off of the construction of the Pwalugu Multi-purpose dam project, which covers irrigation, flood control and hydropower in the Talensi District.
The sod cutting ceremony for the Pwalugu Multi-purpose dam and the Rock Estates affordable housing project both in the Talensi District is a clear indication of President Nana Addo’s commitment to bridging the development gap between the Northern and Southern Ghana.
As we are aware, the $993 million Project area is located on the White Volta River in Ghana, about 16km east of Pwalugu Bridge on the main Tamale-Bolgatanga road in the Talensi District and sharing boundary with the North East Region.
The prospect of this timely social intervention when completed will be a sustainable solution of rural-urban migration of women and children in the region.
Ladies and Gentlemen, We are delighted that the NPP government has come to ameliorate the plight of the people of the region.
The deaths of people and destruction of farms and properties in the region as a result of the spillage of the Bagre Dam from Burkina Faso will become a thing of the past once the project is completed.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the issue of rural-urban migration is rife in the region due to lack of employable opportunities and its dire consequence on the productivity of this region cannot be overlooked, thus, the irrigation facility under the project has the capacity to create thousands of both direct and indirect jobs for our women through the agricultural value chain is certainly a sigh of relief for us.
The migration of our people from this region especially women and the girl-child to Southern Ghana in search for greener pastures end up taking up menial jobs and in some cases get sexually exploited, with others becoming dropouts is a worrying situation that require interventions like this to salvage these vulnerable people.
Therefore, the Pwalugu Multi-purpose project couldn’t have come at an opportune time than now to save the masses from the neglect by the previous NDC government.
I therefore call on my colleague women to prepare in readiness for the opportunities this project comes with to improve the living standards.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the construction of 60MW hydropower and solar 50MW electricity under the project will improve the conversation of our environment as many rural women who resort to firewood for domestic use will have access to electricity.
When this project is finally completed, a lot of rural women who hitherto did not have access to electricity will not only be connected to the national grid but set-up small scale electricity driven economic ventures to improve their livelihood.
It is our fervent hope that, the completion of the Pwalugu Multi-purpose dam project will be a panacea to our concerted efforts of end rural-urban migration and its consequences on Northern women and children.
Benefits of the Project
The socio-economic benefits of the ‘Game changer’ project cover irrigation, fisheries, power generation and flood control which is key for poverty eradication.
Firstly, the key benefit of the 25,000 hectares Irrigation Scheme will be the largest in the country. This will boost economic activity in the Upper East and North East regions, as it will enhance the productivity of farming and attract large-scale commercial farms supported by about 15,000 out grower farmers.
The project also has the potential to increase annual rice production in the country by up 117,000 tons and maize by up to 49,000 tons, reducing imports of these grains by 16% and 32% respectively. This will save foreign exchange as well as stabilize prices of these commodities on the local market.
Other crops such as onions, tomatoes, sweet potato, sweet pepper and watermelon will also benefit from increased production.
The scheme will also form the nucleus of an agro industry to process the output of the farms geared at supporting Government’s Planting for Food and Jobs and the One-District One-Factory initiative programs.
The development of aquaculture and fisheries component of the scheme will also create jobs for the youth and meet the increasing demand for fish in the region.
Secondly, the hydropower component of the project will contribute to increase Ghana’s renewable target of 10% by 2030 while the solar component will complement hydro energy to achieve power supply reliability in Northern Ghana.
Again, the dam will also provide protection for the perennial floods that occur along the White Volta basin through five districts of the Upper East Region during the rainy season and help manage spillage of water from the Bagre dam.
The women of the Upper East Region are convinced that, the execution of this project by the NPP government is a dedication to humanity and an agenda for the holistic development of Northern Ghana.
Let me appeal to our women to vote massively to retain the Nana Addo led government in 2020 for the prosperity of the Upper East Region and Ghana at large.

Signed ……………………..
Georgina Ayamba
Upper East Regional Women’s Organizer – NPP

Link Community trains 87 facilitators to teach 2875 deprived girls in rural areas

0

Despite living in a technological world, some parents in the Bawku West District still believe that the boy child is superior to the girl child and will not waste their resources educating the girl child through the formal education.

This thought according to some youth in the communities has negatively affected many young girls in the district causing some of them to fall victim to early marriage while others found it difficult to proceed to the tertiary level.

It is against this background that Link Community Development, a nonprofit organization with focus on empowering vulnerable girls in the rural areas, has organized a 10-day training for 87 selected youth in four districts of the Upper East Region.

The training aimed at assessing the facilitators’ strengths and weaknesses as well as sharpen their facilitation skills for effective delivery during the ALP classes for some selected deprived girls.

The training of trainers also sort to provide inclusive education for all vulnerable girls who have dropped out of school and yearned to return to the classroom.

The trainers, however, have undergone literacy, numeracy, life skills and a little bit of English Language which aimed at supporting the lives of these deprived out of school girls between the ages of 10 and 19 years in the communities.

Speaking to the media, the Project Coordinator for Link Community Development, Faara Joachim explained that the organization has implemented a strategic approach to girls’ education project that seeks to transition the vulnerable girls into formal education.

He added that per their data analysis at the targeted communities in the four districts, at least10 percent of the target girls had had some forms of disability which in one way or the other has barred them from attending school, hence will see the light to transition themselves back to school after they have gone through the STAGE project.

He also stressed that, 2875 vulnerable girls out of 85 community groups in the four districts will benefit from the STAGE project for a year.

Mr. Joachim, however, added that these districts; Bawku West, Kassena-Nankana West, Bolgatanga Municipal and Nadam District were selected based on the negative perceptions of parents in educating their girl child.
