Sub chief duped after attempts to ‘buy’ Nanton Kingship

0

Police in Tamale are keeping a man in custody for allegedly defrauding a chief in the Nanton traditional area in the Northern region of a  sum of GH50,000.00 after he (the chief) attempted to use inducements to seek the Nanton chieftaincy skin.

28-year-old Ibrahim Musah is currently facing charges for defrauding the chief of Sahakpaligu when he tried lobbying traditional decision makers to appoint him next chief of the Nanton paramountcy following the death of Nanton Naa Alhaji Alhassan Sulemana.

Police said in May this year, just eight months after the late chief died, the son of Sahakpaligu chief Sulemana Seidu approached the secretary of the Nanton palace, Sulley Seidu, also a son of the late chief and declared his father’s interest in the vacant skin and sought for his support.

The Son of the late Nanton chief, according to police, allegedly agreed to promote and assist the ambition of the sub chief and then gave out a mobile phone number purported to be telephone contact details of the Regent of Yendi to Sulemana Seidu.

From June to August this year, police added, the chief of Sahakpaligu and his son begun to engage the contact giving to them by the palace secretary and son of late Naa Alhassan. Details of their engagement were not provided but police said the contact immediately confirmed as the Regent of Yendi.

The contact in the course of interactions was able to trick the chief to send half a million cedis to the number through the Mobile Money transaction. Police have unveiled the number; 0540447874.

According to the police statement delivered to newsmen through the internet by the regional police spokesman ASP Mohammed Tanko, the deal was however uncovered when the sub chief paid recent visit to the Regent to ascertain progress of ‘their’ engagement and also make bigger commitment.

“The Regent denied having received such monies”, according to investigators, adding that, “The complainant further checks at the MTN office, Tamale and got to the owner being Ibrahim Musah and then reported the case to police on 02/09/17 leading to the arrest of the suspect on 05/09/17”.

The secretary and son of the late Nanton Naa Sulley Seidu who gave out the contact to the suspect was earlier arrested by the police but released without any charge for yet undisclosed reasons.

It is also unclear why the palace secretary agreed to assist another candidate against his own brother who is the current Regent of Nanton and may also contest for the skin but StarrNews understands it is now the subject of palatial investigations, and the secretary would be handed a harsher sanction when found culpable.

The chief of Sahakpaligu is legitimate to occupy the Nanton skin but palace sources told Starr News some elders of the palace are angry and disturbed by the action of the sub chief.

The sources said others feel the sub chief was very desperate and are considering a punishing him for customary violations.

The chief of Nanton died in early September last year. During his funeral rite two weeks after, some chiefs of the Abudu and Andani royal families clashed over the right to officiate an installation of a regent for the traditional area.  Security forces were deployed and calm assured. I

Ssahaka Sulemana, a director at the Audit Service and elder son of the late chief was enskinned the Regent pending final funeral ceremony of which date is yet not known by elders of the paramountcy.

People have tried to influence Manasseh to drop stories against them through me-Lawyer Anyenini

Private legal practitioner, Samson Lardy Anyenini has said some individuals have tried to bribe ace investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni to drop stories of alleged corrupt act against them.

Mr. Anyenini said “people with deep pockets” on several occasions have not only tried to influence the journalist to drop stories of corrupt acts leveled against them but they have as well on different occasions threatened to take off the investigative journalist’s life if he go ahead with his investigative piece.

Some of these influences to the journalist according lawyer Anyenini are sometimes targeted at him, because he is a lawyer of multimedia Group of Companies where Manasseh works.

Lawyer Anyenini recounting his fatal car crash which nearly sent him to his early grave said he was promised a brand new car if he could influence Manasseh to drop an investigative story.

“When I had the accident that almost killed me recently and my car was declared completely written off. A car with sufficient gadgets that you thought would have safely protected no matter what, came flattened and by God’s grace I survived. Around that time, Manasseh was about to release yet another corruption scandal about how the nation was being robbed, daylight robbery. I got contacted and the first words were, oh you just had an accident and your car is spoiled beyond repair. You know what we will give you a new one. Just tell him [Manasseh] to drop this story. And I said well, my car is comprehensively insured, I will get another one”

Lawyer Anyenini made this remark during the 5th (52nd) quadrennial conference of Upper East regional chapter of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) held in Bolgatanga.

Northerners are difficult people for a good reason-lawyer Anyenini

Northerners are difficult people for a good reason-lawyer Anyenini

Host of Joy FM and Joy News flagship program, Newsfile, Friday admitted that Northerners are difficult people but their difficulty is for a good reason.

Lawyer Anyenini’s admittance comes barely weeks after the resignation of deputy agriculture minister, William Agyapong Quaitoo over his ethnocentric and insulting statement.

Mr. Agyapong was heavily criticized and condemned widely for describing Northerners as difficult people and liars who want to lie and get government support through the fall armyworm invasion.

But Lawyer Anyenini who is a northerner and hails from Gambibgo, a farming community in the Bolgatanga municipality of Upper East region recounted his difficulty back at his days as a child said he escaped to Kumasi after he had engaged in ‘by day’ farm work, kola nuts selling and ‘waakye leaves’ selling at Bolga market.

According to him upon his arrival in the garden city, he was advised to learn fridge or electronic gadgets repairs because he was considered to have grown beyond school age. But he declined the offer so he could further his education because he is difficult.

According to him, if not for his difficulty, “people with deep pockets” in the country would have had their way through him with goodies to influence Manasseh Azure Awuni to drop stories of alleged corruption leveled against them. But for the fact that he and Manasseh who are difficult for a good reason just like anti-corruption crusader, Martin Amidu, a northerner too, they were able to reject temptations to drop investigative reports of corrupt acts.

“It is true we are difficult, what is not true is that we tell lies. We don’t lie so anybody who says we are a bunched of liars should look themselves well in the mirror”

“Yes we are difficult but we are difficult for the good reasons. I say we are difficult like Martin Amidu, we are difficult like Manasseh Azure”

Lawyer Anyenini said this during the 5th (52nd) quadrennial conference of Upper East regional chapter of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) held in Bolgatanga.

We will resist attempts to move us to the old market – Traders tell Assembly

BOLGATANGA OLD MARKET ENGULFED WITH OPEN DEFECATION
BOLGATANGA OLD MARKET ENGULFED WITH OPEN DEFECATION

Traders who have moved from the Old Market in the Upper East regional capita, Bolgatanga to the New Market have said they are not ready to move back to the old market.

This comes days after the Municipal Chief Executive of the Bolgatanga Municipality, Ameyuuri hinted plans by the Assembly to decongest the new market by moving some traders back to the old market.

But speaking to A1 Radio’s Christopher Asima on “Reporters Visit”, traders selling their wares on the shoulders of the road in the old market said the old market does not present conditions that are favourable to their wares and customers and therefore are not ready to leave anytime soon.

A yam seller who spoke to Christopher indicated that “there is no space in the old market so we are not willing to move there anytime soon. For here, there is space and in the dry season we can store our wares without any fear of them been rotten because there is enough space”.

He further indicated that trucks and cars that come to the market to off load goods find difficulty enter the old market as compared to the new market which has accessible roads.

He, however, indicated that the Assembly has not officially informed the traders of the proposed decongestion.

Meanwhile, traders in the old market have backed the proposal by the Assembly to decongest the new market. According to them, moving their colleagues from the new market to the old market will be a major boost for the market which has suffered neglect for a very long time.

U/E: Fix defunct traffic lights to avoid needless accidents – Taxi Drivers to Municipal Assembly

1

Taxi Drivers in the Upper East region are asking the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly to as a matter of urgency work on the faulty traffic lights in the regional capital.

According to them, a number of accidents which could avoided has been recorded as a result of the faulty traffic lights in the regional capital.

Speaking to Sulemana Akurugu on A1 Radio’s ‘Reporters Visit’, Michael Ayine, a taxi driver who works from the Taxi Rank to the Bolgatanga hospital indicated that the situation is worrying and does not speak well of a regional capital like Bolgatanga.

He indicated that drivers have had to suffer the brunt of the carelessness of people in power who should have fixed the traffic lights some months ago. He indicated that motor riders take advantage of the blunder to ride recklessly and that has brought about several crashes which could have been avoided.

Another driver who spoke to A1 Radio said “it is a worry. They say drivers don’t like traffic and that we jump traffic all the time but that is not the case. Traffic Lights regulates movement and the absence of it brings chaos to the roads because people do what they want without regard for the law. They need to work on this. I believe the regional minister is listening to me and he listens so he will ensure that they are worked on”.

Traffic lights in the Upper East regional capital, Bolgatanga have not been functioning for over five months; a situation which has made the region to record several needless accidents which could have been avoided if the traffic lights were functioning.

Our checks with the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly indicate that the Assembly does not have engineers to fix the light. Engineers are expected to travel from Greater Accra to Bolgatanga to fix the traffic lights hence the delay.

NDC school not to brainwash – Mahama

JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA- FORMER PRESIDENT, GHANA
JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA- FORMER PRESIDENT, GHANA

Former President John Mahama has dismissed claims that the NDC’s Institute of Social Democracy is being set up to brainwash party members who patronize it.

According to him, the ideological school set up by the opposition party is open to everybody who has ideas about social democracy.

“The thinking was that it will be set up after we entered multi-party democracy but for 25 years our party has continued without setting up its ideological and party training school, and so I want to congratulate all those who have been behind the setting up of this institute.

“It is a very useful institute and it is going to be a source of knowledge not only to party cadres but for people who have the ideological orientation of social democracy to gain ideas of leadership, nationalism and patriotism. I am very happy and I want to congratulate those who have brought this idea to birth,” the former president said during the maiden lecture at the Institute, located at the party’s headquarters in Adabraka, Accra.

The former president added “Contrary to widespread perception, institutes like this are not institutes for indoctrinating people. The perception in the First Republic was that the ideological institutes were set up to brainwash and to become ideologically robust of the governing party.

“But this is not the case. If you look at the curriculum of the ideological institute, it contains programmes of leadership, how to lead in a community, it contains programmes of party activism, it also contain programmes of community self-help, it contains programmes of nationalism, patriotism – how to be patriotic to your country.”

The NDC, decided to set up the school after it lost the 2016 elections, as part of reforms to recapture political power in future elections.

Businesses prosper “the most” under NDC – Mahama

PRESIDENT JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA
PRESIDENT JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA

Private businesses in Ghana thrive the “most” under the National Democratic Congress, former President John Mahama has stated.

He said claims that the opposition party, which is socialist in orientation, is against business are false and misleading.

Speaking at the first enrollment ceremony at the NDC’s ideological Institute in Accra, Mahama urged members of the party to be proud of their ideological and their achievement while in power.

“Indeed some of the parties that call themselves conservative parties have moved left from centre and today are involved in social safety nets like National Health Insurance, Free Senior High School and others that are all social democratic programmes and so we must be proud of our ideological orientation and we must redefine it so that people clear the misconception they have about social democracy

“We must let people know that our party is not against business. In times that our party has been in government, businesses have prospered the most. Even so-called conservative and property-owning parties in Africa cannot afford to be the kind of conservative parties that we find elsewhere,” he stated.

He added: “If you go to the developed countries, when the conservatives come to power they whittle away social welfare but in Africa, you can’t whittle away social welfare”.

He also dispelled rumours that the NDC school was set up for sinister motives.

“Contrary to widespread perception, institutes like this are not institutes for indoctrinating people. The perception in the First Republic was that the ideological institutes were set up to brainwash and to become ideologically robust of the governing party”.

UE/R: Snake bites Police recruit whilst defecating in Bush

0

One of the recruits at the Police Public Safety Training School (PPSTS) in the Upper East region has suffered a snakebite whilst answering the call of nature in the bush at night.

A chronic water crisis at the school has rendered its flush toilets inoperative whereupon close to a thousand recruits, more than 400 of whom are females, now have to squat dangerously in the bush to ease themselves.

“We have recorded one snake bite,” the Director of the school, ACP Adusah Poku, told Starr News Thursday. “He was taken to the hospital. We also have anti-snake venom here; so, we took it along. Now, the bush is overgrowing. If you go there, you can have problems.”

He disclosed further: “We have a 20-room toilet facility but we cannot use it because we don’t have the water to flush it. As for bathing, the recruits can get some water to bathe. The only water we have is for their feeding and for their bathing. But for the flushing, we don’t have the water. So, they have to go into the bush to ease themselves.”

A number of recruits rushed into the bush after the recruit (name withheld) gave a shout of horror during the snake attack, but the poisonous reptile had slithered away through the bush. The victim, whilst in pain, could only describe the snake as thick and short, as he pointed in the direction the snake went and grabbed his leg where it had sunk its fangs.

Meanwhile, authorities have advised all recruits to get a torch to lead the way when they are heading for the bush at night and a cutlass to use for burying the waste when they are done.

“Fortunately, the recruit survived the snake attack. But we’ve made them (the recruits) to acquire torchlights and they go there with a cutlass. If they go there without a cutlass and they defecate around, you can’t go there the next day. Over 800 recruits going to the bush, can you go there every day? That is why they have to dig a hole and cover it so that the next day they can still go there,” the Director said.

The good and the ugly

The institution, established in 2005, was formerly known as the Pwalugu Police Training School, training only recruits.

It was converted in 2014 into Police Public Safety Training School to groom recruits into police officers and to conduct international training programmes for both junior and senior police ranks on how to effectively counter cross-border terrorism attacks, armed robbery operations and illegal mining activities among other high-risk security missions.

Despite the upgrade, the school still lacks some requisite structures that befit an institution of that status. Its dormitories and classrooms need seriously expansion so trainees can be conveniently accommodated. The school’s computer laboratory is big but boring. The 30 sets of computers found in the laboratory are not internet-connected. The administration wants a barbed-wire fence wall but that dream is yet far from start.

But the good news is that a road network with drains is being constructed on the campus. The old lamentations over the lack of security lights are also over. The area is now well lit with photo-sensor skylite lamps. Besides, a contractor is about to finish and hand over a brand new 100-metre parade ground to the administration.

Above all, the UniBank Ghana Limited is making efforts to provide the school with a concrete overhead water tank to bring an end to the water crisis.

ACP Poku spoke of the UniBank intervention: “We have brought experts and a contractor. They have taken the measurements already. We Community Water and Sanitation officials also came and took the estimates. They are studying it. We are only awaiting approval for the construction to start.”
