SHS students in Upper East Region expected to buy reams of A4 sheets, lightbulbs, markers et al  – CHASS confirms

0

New students reporting to second cycle institutions under the government’s Free SHS policy in the Upper East Region are expected to report along with torchlights, lightbulbs, boxes of temporary makers, reams of A4 sheets among others, the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools has confirmed to A1 Radio’s Mark Smith on the Day Break Upper East Show today, Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

In prospectuses cited by this website, students were expected to purchase their own uniforms when in the past, the government insisted that the cost of uniforms be absorbed under the Free Senior High School policy.

Additionally, students are expected to purchase a box of whiteboard markers each, a ream of A4 sheets, energy-saving bulbs, a litre of PowerZone and powdered soap each, torch lights, and two batteries.

When contacted, the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) explained that these additions have been made to allow the schools systems run effectively. While there is a general list of items students would have to procure, some peculiar items would have to be added to lists of schools in the Upper East Region for specific reasons.

Richard Akumbasi, the Upper East Regional President of the Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) said, “You know there is a general basic requirement and there are some that are school specific. [There are] some schools that may need some specific items, peculiar to them. For example, if it is a mission school and they are demanding a Bible, you will understand that because of the peculiarity of that school, you would definitely need a Bible. We have a common prospectus that runs through the entire schools [in the region]. This was discussed and sent to the Director-General for approval. All the heads have been schooled on that. We have told every head not to stray from what has been generally agreed upon.”

“Recently we had some challenges with one or two items and I am sure that in due course, we would come to a conclusion. As far as the Upper East Region is concerned, we agreed and sent it to the Director-General,” he said.

While these issues have been added to the prospectus of some schools, they remain a contentious issue among heads of schools.

“Those are the issues that I am saying is in contention and we are discussing them. We needed to include them. If you teach without examining the children, the teaching would not be meaningful. We realised that almost all the schools have challenges. Look, we started the year with a reamm of paper being Ghc25, and this rose to Ghc75 and even in some areas, Ghc80. Even if the government were to pay what they owe us, we can’t even buy the rim of the papers in the quantities that we require. In fact for the Form 3s, we have 2 or 3 mocks. The more mock exams they write, the better they are prepared for the final exam. And so if you don’t have the stationery to do and you wait and conduct only one mock, which may not even be standard if you do not have the required number of materials to conduct, at the end of the day, the results would not be good and the blame comes back to we the heads again. Answer booklet is a very serious problem if you look at the beginning of the year, what the suppliers were prepared to give. The price has more than quadrupled, and we do not even know how to manage that,” he said.

According to Mr. Akumbasi, before the decision to include some materials that would not normally have been included, some parents were consulted through established parent associations.

Gurene language goes live on Wikipedia

0

Gurene has become the fourth Ghanaian language to be approved on Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia edited by volunteers around the world and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

The language, also known as Farefare and Ninkare, is spoken in the Upper East Region of Ghana, and southern Burkina Faso respectively.

The language was approved on Friday, 27th January 2023 during its incubation stage in the Wikimedia Incubator. The transition was completed on Monday, 27th February 2023.

This makes it possible for users to read Wikipedia in the Gurene language as well as access some materials exclusive to the Gurene history, culture and its people.

This can be accessed via gur.wikipedia.org or through the translation button.

The Gurene language joins Dagbani, Twi and Eʋegbe [Ewe] as recognized Ghanaian languages by the open data platform.

The process spearheaded by Gurene Wikimedia Community began in September 2021.

This group is a sister group of Dagbani Wikimedians User Group which oversees the archiving of Mabia Languages [formerly known as Mole Dagbani Language].

This language is closely related to Dagbani and other languages of Northern Ghana, and also related to Mossi, also known as Mooré, the national language of Burkina Faso.

You had 12 MPs from Upper East Region in 2016 yet failed to complete Bolga-Bawku Road – NPP responds to NDC

0

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) morality to question the progress of work on the Bolga-Bawku-Pulmakom road is being called into question.

“It is quite depressing if not heartbreaking that at the back of all the failed promise and politrick, they had as much as 12 Members of Parliament who could not convince their own President to attend to the teething plight of their constituents. It is therefore worth asking if the NDC and their John Mahama have any credible basis to be questioning the NPP about this road. You the good people of the upper east trusted them, you thought they were partners in development, but they shrugged you off with disdain and ridiculed your frustrations. I cannot even quote what their Regional Secretary said to you and all of us concerning this road at the time. In 2012, John Mahama raked in some 274 019 votes, representing 66.43% of the votes in this region, yet he denied us such a critical project. On the other hand, Nana Addo received 120,814 votes, representing 29.29%. Is it not fair to argue that to whom much is given, much is expected?”

Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga, the Upper East Regional Communications Director for the NPP said this at a presser to respond to the NDC’s Upper East Must Know presser earlier this month.

It would be recalled that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Upper East Region, has sent a strong word of caution to President Akufo-Addo over the abandonment of the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom road.

“We too are tax payers, and deserve nothing less. The project must not stall,” Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, the Upper East Regional COmmunication Officer warned when he spoke at the maiden edition of the NDC Communication Bureau’s “Upper East Region Must Know’ series today, February 21, 2023 at the party’s Regional Office in Zuarungu.

Queiroz Galvao MI, the Brazilian contractor working on the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom Road in the Upper East Region has packed out of the site.

When A1 Radio’s News team visited portions of the road where the contractor worked,  Friday, February 10, 2023, it was clear that the contractor had packed all the firm’s equipment and left the site.

Though the Upper East Regional Road and Highways Directorate is yet to comment on the matter, a deep-throat source who spoke to Moses Apiah explained that the contractor’s abrupt leave could be attributed to the inability of the government to disburse monies for work to continue.

The NDC suggested that the government had run out of funds to pursue the construction of the road.

“In recent weeks as witnessed by you all, the construction firm, QGMI a subsidiary of Queiroz Galvao S/A working on the major parts of the Bolgatanga-BawkuPolimakom road project has moved all its heavy equipment and machines out of the region. Friends from the media, our sources tell us that this recent suspension of the project is due to the Domestic Debt Structuring Programme (DDEP) imposed on ghanaians by this wicked government as part of the IMF’s conditionalities. This was alluded to by president Akufo-Addo at a meeting with Western Regional House of Chiefs at the Jubilee House on Monday, 30th January, 2023 as cited in a City Newsroom report on 31 January, 2023.”

The press conference held at the party’s regional office, according to Mr. Ayinbisa, sought “to question the moral-rightfulness of the NDC to talk about the Bolgatanga Bawku –Polimakom road, punch at some deliberate attempts to suppress the facts for political expediency, offer you some background of the project with up-to-date progress report, highlight on some major achievements of the government on road infrastructure in the region and comment on the purported shortage of routine vaccines in the region.”

Mr. Ayinbisa suggested that the NDC, had no moral right to speak about the construction or progress of the Bolga-Bawku Pulmakom road.

You can’t question us on Bolga-Bawku road – NPP responds to NDC’s press conference

1

“The NDC cannot question us on the Bolga-Bawku road. I repeat, the NDC cannot question us on the Bolga-Bawku road.”

Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga, the Upper East Regional Communications Director of the NPP made this statement at a press conference held by the party today, February 28, 2023, in the Upper East Region.

The press conference, according to Mr.

“Ladies and gentlemen, prior to the coming into office of the NPP government in 2017, the

region was bedevilled with bad roads. The abysmal performance of the NDC in the road sector reflected the terrible nature of our roads at that time. An accurate and true reflection of the NDC’s double standard and indeed hypocrisy is cited by Mr Offei-Akoto Ayeh‟s report as captured by A1 Radio in 2016 which details the travesty of the NDC‟s deceit, concerning this road as far back in 2012.”

” A portion of the statement reads as follows – In 2012, the youth of Bawku and commercial drivers hit the streets to register their displeasure about the state of the road that leads to one of the nation’s busiest commercial towns. The protest was followed with commercial drivers refusing to ply the road, leaving passengers stranded and as expected in an election year, heavy duty vehicles and equipment’s were moved to the site and the supposed fixing begun. However, work on the road seized after the elections with all the heavy-duty equipment disappearing into thin air. – There is no gain saying that the pretense of working on the road was to trick the people of upper east for votes.”

“In the same report, the then sitting President made a categorical pledge to the Kusaug people to fix the road – I want to promise you that the next time I come

to Bawku the road between Bolga and Bawku will not be the main issue, as soon as

I go back to Accra, I am going to speak to the road minister and you will see for

yourselves the difference that will take place. – Additionally, in 2015, John Mahama is quoted by the above cited news report promising yet again on this road having done so three years earlier without any work to show. He was emphatic that – I know that is a very important road and I can assure you that by the time I’m coming back next year, it will be in a much better condition than it is now. – Ladies and gentlemen of the press, was this road anything close to better before the NDC left power in 2016?”

Kotintaabig chief celebrates annual festival with a call for peace between Kusasis and Mamprusis

0

The chief of Kotintaabig, a community under the Sakote traditional area in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region, Naba Bilheesong Lagwongt, has called on the feuding factions in Bawku, Kusasis, and Mamprusis to give peace a chance.

“Let me stand on the request for peace to appeal to our neighbouring Kusaug traditional area and the Kandiga/Doba communities to allow peace to prevail to enable development to take place in the region.”

He said the Upper East Region was lagging behind in terms of development because the resources meant to improve the lives of the residents were “mostly sacrificed on the basis of security upkeep.”

He made this passionate appeal during this year’s celebration of the annual Belim Ku’ure festival by the people of Kotintaabig. The festival is celebrated to foster unity among the people while trying to initiate developmental projects. The theme for this year’s celebration was ‘harnessing cultural resources for peacebuilding and development; the role of the traditional leader’.

Naba Lagwongt used the occasion to caution politicians and the media to be circumspect in dealing with matters on the chieftaincy institution. While calling on stakeholders to hold the chieftaincy institution in high esteem, Naba Lagwongt said the chieftaincy institute should also “endure to itself the reverence and reputation it is expected to create for itself”

Speaking on the country’s economy, the chief of Kotintaabig called on Ghanaians to domesticate and eat food produced in the country. The chief commended government for the provision of the Kontintaabig dam but appealed to government to address an elephant invasion that destroys crops annually by creating a tourist hub in Sakote to attract potential tourists in the Nabdam district.

He lamented that the community members were cut off during the rainy season due to the deplorable nature of the Sakote-Pelungu road.

The District Chief Executive for Nabdam, Madam Agnes Anamoo said major roads in the districts including the Gane Asonge road up to Pelungu through Kotintaabig are earmarked for construction with funding from the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) project.

She said the government would continue to provide social amenities and infrastructure to improve the lives of Nabdams and Ghanaians as a whole.

On his part, the Member of Parliament for Nabdam, Dr Mark Murt Nawaane thanked the people of Nabdam for the confidence they reposed in him as their MP. He said he was able to construct an ultramodern police station at Pelungu to provide security to the people. Dr Nawaane mentioned the construction of CHPS compounds and the drilling of boreholes as some of the major activities he had carried out during his tenure.

Businessman leads over thousand NPP supporters in unity walk at Bolga East

0

More than one thousand supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bolgatanga East constituency of the Upper East Region had embarked on a unity walk. The walk that took place on the principal streets of Zuarungu, the district capital, was geared towards closing the ranks of the elephant party and building broken bridges in the aftermath of the 2020 general elections.

The unprecedented unity walk in the history of the constituency saw regional, constituency, and government appointees, elders, electoral area coordinators, and sympathisers of the NPP both take part.

The unity walk, which was under the theme, “Uniting Together Towards Breaking the Eight in 2024” was sponsored by a businessman and a staunch member of the party in the constituency, Mathew Silas Amoah.

The businessman observed that “what has drawing the party back was disunity” hence the need to embark on a unity process ahead of the general election next year. Mr Amoah was optimistic that the NPP would break the 8-year mantra regardless of the economic challenges confronting Ghanaians.

“We admit that things are hard and it is not just Ghana. It is everywhere. NPP is a government people should trust. We would put our stuff together and get the economy back on track to break the 8.”

He mentioned projects and policies under the Akufo-Addo-led government such as Agenda 111, roads, the new Bolgatanga East District office, 1 constituency 1 ambulance, and free SHS, among others, that Ghanaians would consider when renewing the mandate of the NPP.

“Politics is not done on air, talking and hitting tables. We are going to do comparisons. We are breaking the 8 and there is no doubt about that”, he added.

Even though posters, flyers, and T-shirts of the businessman had emerged, Mr Amoah said he has not decided to contest or otherwise the NPP parliamentary primaries in the Bolgatanga East constituency, “but if the people feel it is necessary for me to come, why not, I will gladly accept”

The Bolgatanga East constituency has since been occupied by the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament, Dr Dominic Akuretinga Ayine since its creation in 2012. But the Upper East Regional Secretary of the NPP, Elvis Figo Awonekai was optimistic that the NPP was poised at winning the seat for the first time in the 2024 general elections.

According to the Salahu-Deen Musah Al-Khokeini, the Upper East Regional Youth Organizer of the NPP, the incumbent MP for the Bolgatanga East “has done nothing since he went to parliament”, rather, he places priority on party issues to the detriment of the wellbeing of the constituents.

“The library project he started is still uncompleted but the Ghc2.5 million party office that he built has been completed”
