Assistant Director of Education at the Savelugu Municipal Education Office, Alhassan Sumani, has urged teachers to use positive re-enforcers such as material and non-material re-enforcers to encourage pupils/students to learn and put up their best in class.

He said it was not advisable for teachers to score students zero marks or draw derogatory images in the exercise books of non-performing pupils/students simply because they could not   perform well in a particular subject area. This, he said dampens the spirits of pupils/students to learn and put up their best in class.

Mr. Sumani who was facilitating a two-day in-service training workshop for teaching staff of Modern Star Integrated School (MSIS-Tamale) in Tamale also advised teachers to always dialogue with students at an equal level to be able to unravel individual pupils/students challenges and proffer solutions to improve the academic performance of the pupils/students.

The two-day in-service training workshop is part of efforts by management of MSIS-Tamale to sharpen the skills of teaching staff of the school to deliver efficient and quality teaching to enhance academic performance of pupils/students.

The initiative is also part of management’s decision to build the capacity of the teaching staff of the school to upgrade their professional skills, knowledge base and interest.

Participants were taken through pedagogies of teaching, class assessment and classroom management by resource persons from the Ghana Education Service.

The Assistant Director of Education at the Savelugu Municipal Education Office, Mr. Alhassam Sumani, encouraged management to always endeavor to organize in-service training for their staff to increase their capacity to be able to deliver well and ultimately ensure good academic performance of pupils/students.

She added “if teachers are to perform their functions effectively and efficiently, it becomes imperative for them to require training in new skills and modern methodology”.

The in-service training she said is a prelude to the reopening of school after a long break to refresh the teaching expertise of the teaching staff.

Mrs. Nkara Kpiniong urged the teaching staff of the school to take opportunity of the refresher course to improve upon their skills and put it into practice in the classrooms.

Master Bismark, a subject teacher who spoke to journalists said the training programme will go a long way to improve on their teaching skills considering the caliber of resource persons who engaged them through the training workshop.
