Communications Member of the Convention People’s Party CPP in the Upper East Region, Richard Adongo says, the recent results put out by the General Legal Council from the Ghana School of Law is suspicious.

According to him, out of the 1,800 students who sat for the examination, only 500 of them passed, which in his view, is not a true picture of the results from the examination.

“We are leaving some people to hijack the destinies of people in this country, and do what they like and I will give just one example. About some 3 or 4 months ago some 1,800 Ghanaians sort entry into the Professional Legal Programme at the Ghana School of Law, which is popularly called “MAKOLA.

For those who dont know what it means, to be a Lawyer, you need to first have a first degree in Law what we call the LLB and from there, you need to enter into the Professional Legal Program, which is referred to as MAKOLA, before you can graduate if you meet the requirements.

To enter MOKOLA, you must write an entrance exam, which over 1,800 people wrote and when the result came, less than 500 of them passed nationwide. As I speak today, the ratio between One Lawyer to every citizen is 100 Lawyers to 9000 people and this affects we the North more. And all these are going on because of a body called General Legal Council.” Richard Adongo said.

Richard Adongo, a Law student suspects the authorities have had some under-hand dealings and a deliberate massage to limit the number of intake into the Legal Profession.

He made these comments on A1 Radio’s Morning program “Daybreak Upper East in Bolgatanga.

Richard Adongo joins a tall list of Ghanaians and Law Students who believe the General Legal Council is not interested in have many Lawyers in the country, so as to get a few privileged ones to take advantage of the masses, who come for their services.

Per observation the three regions located in the Northern part of Ghana, being the Upper East Region, Upper West Region and Northern region, have very few number of Practicing Lawyers and so people get the Court without Legal Representation either due to their inability to find one or inability to pay the fees.
