Bolgatanga: Man granted bail for assaulting police office

Bolgatanga Magistrates Court on Monday granted bail to the man standing trial for physically assaulting a police officer. Jonathan Atua was arrested on 19th October, 2018 and put before the court for allegedly beating to pulse, General Corporal Lawrence Partey of the Bolgatanga Municipal Police station.

The victim sustained head injuries and went into coma before he was rushed to the Upper East Regional Hospital from where he was referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

On Monday when he made his third appearance, Mr. Atua, through his lawyer, was granted court bail to a sum of Ghc 10,000 with two sureties and is to reappear on November 14, 2018.

Before granting bail the accused person, presiding judge, His Lordship Oman Abdul-Hackeem, advised the accused and the public in general to always exercise restraint upon provocation so as not to find themselves in the hands of the law.

Lawyer Richard Adazabra, counsel for the accused person explained that the offense of assault as in the case of his client is a minor offense and at the next date, the court will determine how the trial will take place.

He was hopeful the court would allow the families of the accused person and the victim to settle the matter amicably because the two families have cooperated very with the family of the accused person absorbing all the medical expenses of the victim.
