Ruby was born 19 years ago; she is from Gorogo Sapak in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region. I met Ruby with the mother at the Talensi district assembly during a disbursement of District Common Fund allocated for Persons with Disability in the District.
Unlike some other Persons with disability I saw there who also came to access their fund, Ruby’s condition got me emotional. Ruby was carried with the help of her mother and one other relative to the office as her legs and hands cannot function. She appears helpless which has struck me with stronger feelings for the innocent girl confronted with such a lifetime challenge.
The bright cheerful girl Ruby is now seen as a burden to her parents and society because of her condition.
Ruby’s mother tells me, she and the father have visited the hospital and some other places to have their daughter’s condition to be improved, but to no avail. Regardless, she is still optimistic that her daughter’s condition would become better someday.
Ruby’s mother takes care of her as a jobless mother, but rely on Ruby’s father who is into petty farming.
Engaging Ruby briefly, she choose to speak to me through a song, which was translated to me as, she will continue to worship God no matter her current condition.
For those who are touched with story of Ruby and want to support her for a better living, you can kindly contact A1 radio in Bolgatanga of the Upper East Region of Ghana.
