Since the recorded cases of Covid19 in Ghana, several measures have been put in place to curb the spread of the disease from the national level and directed to all regions in the country.

So far,Tamale in the Northern Region is the latest to record 10 cases bringing the national figures from Greater Accra and Ashanti Region to 152

President Nana Akufo initially declared a partial closure of the borders in the country to human movement. And subsequently announced a lockdown of some cities in the country which included; Kumasi ,Accra,Obuasi as part of stringent measures to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

But concerns have been raised about measures put in place to protect residents in the Upper East Region since it was a border region. So A1 News decided to monitor the grounds and collated the following:

  1. All seven(7) borders in the Upper East Region have been closed to human movement.
  2. The Ebola centers have been used as isolation centers at the borders.
  3. The Regional Security Council has directed all MMDCES to embark on sensitization engagements.
  4. Engagements have been made with traditional authorities at the various districts to intensify awareness creation.
  5. Logistics have been distributed to some districts with others yet to do the distributions.
  6. The Ghana Health Service has embarked on public education with discussions and radio jingles in local dialect.
  7. All public gatherings exceeding 25 have also been suspended.
  8. An isolation center has been created at the Regional Hospital.
  9. Some Personal Protective Equipment(PPEs) have been provided.
  10. A joint security action is ensuring adherence to border closure.

On the latest directive of a lockdown in some parts of the country ,below are the measures taken/to be taken;

Pwalungu tollbooth
  1. A joint Team of Health Professionals and security personnel have been stationed at Pwalungu to screen passengers in public transport coming from Accra and other parts of of Southern Ghana into the region. It took effect today.
  2. A rapid response Team with an Ambulance on standby to convey suspected cases to regional hospital.
  3. The Team will be working 24hours in a shift system.
  4. Another Team has been positioned at the Balungu Customs Checkpoint to screen foreigners importing goods into Ghana with Cargo trucks.
  5. An isolation and quarantine centre has been created at Bolgatanga Senior High School in Talensi District to cater for suspected cases.
  6. On the 1st of April, the Bolgatanga Markets will be fumigated.
  7. An emergency meeting of the Regional Security Council is expected to be held tomorrow to streamline further measures to fight Covid19.

Regardless of the measures put in place to ensure that Covid19 is not spread in the region, A1 News observed that the major challenge in the Upper East Region is the countless unapproved routes some foreigners are now using with the aid of locals to penetrate into the country with motorbikes.

It therefore calls for a vigorous awareness creation at border communities to ensure that the danger the region has been exposed to is reduced.

Meanwhile, there is the need for an urgent supply of adequate medical essentials to equip the various health centers since what is available is not adequate especially test kits at the regional hospital.
