The Upper East Regional Branch of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) is calling on authorities to as a matter of urgency conduct mandatory testing for coronavirus on all health workers.

According to the Regional Chairman of the association, Thomas Lambon, the increasing number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 among health workers requires proactive measures to prevent a potential spread of the virus.

As health workers are exposed to Covid-19 patients in their line of work, he explained that there are chances that some of the health workers without symptoms would test positive for the virus at any given time- and they could further spread it to others around them.

Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio on Friday, Mr. Lambon said “I am appealing for a comprehensive test of all health workers. It will help to reduce the number of Covid-19 infections drastically. But as it is now, I don’t think it’s the best. You’re in the unit with somebody- the person tests positive and the person alone is taken out for treatment and comes back. The infected person may have touched ABDC and other workers use the same equipments. Eventually, another health worker tests positive; and that’s how the virus spreads.

Working in the same unit, the person has touched ABCD; you to also touch the same ABCD. How do you know you’ve not been infected? So if they’re able to test all of us at once, we’ll know those who are positive, then get the place disinfected and continue working.”

The current number of Covid-19 active cases among health workers in the Upper East Region is 14; a significant reduction from the figure of January 2021, which was reported as 89; According to Mr. Lambon.
