Waste management is a shared responsibility – Zoomlion urges residents of Upper East Region

A private leading waste management company in the country, Zoomlion Ghana Limited has urged residents of the Upper East Region to change their attitude toward managing waste. The company currently charges Ghc30. 00 for households and Gh40.00 for institutions per month as waste collection fees in the region.

Being the least charged region in the country, the Upper East Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Isaaka Abubakar bemoaned that many households and institutions are still reluctant to take responsibility for managing waste by requesting waste bins to store the waste they produced.

“All the places that have been designated for us to clean are clean. But one thing I want to urge the public is for them to also be responsible to manage their waste. More often than not, people turn to think that the management of waste is the sole responsibility of the contractor and in this case, Zoomlion. People even think that Zoomlion has to clean and even clean their doorsteps, which is not the case.

Mr. Abukari stated the result of the public failure to properly manage waste contributes to the outbreaks of diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera and typhoid.

Mr. Abubakar was speaking to the media on a sideline of an end-of-year thanksgiving service for its workers held at Pusu-Namongo.

The Upper East Regional Manager for Zoomlion Ghana Limited indicated that the company distributed over 2,000 waste bins across the region and with a target to distribute over 3000 bins next year. One major challenge according to Abubakar is that some individuals defecate in the waste containers while others burn the containers.
