Misleading claims identified in Dr. Bawumia’s February 7 address

A fact-check report has revealed an inconsistent and false claim in certain statements made by the Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during his address to the nation on his vision for the country when elected president in the 2024 general election.

Among some false and inconsistent claims made by Dr. Bawumia include the rate of infant mortality recorded and the number of public libraries in the country.
Below are the claims made by Dr. Bawumia and the verdicts presented by A1 Radio’s fact-check desk.

CLAIM: “The government reduced infant mortality per 1000 live births from 37.9 in 2016 to 32.6 in 2022 – Dr. Bawumia on page 20.

EXPLANATION: According to the Ghana Statistical Service Ghana Demographic and Health Survey page 137 published in January 2024 “The infant mortality rate was 28 deaths per 1,000 live births in the 5 years before the survey.”

CLAIM: We have increased the total number of public libraries from 61 in 2017 to 115 by 2023 – Dr. Bawumia on page 16

EXPLANATION: According to the ‘2024 CITIZENS’ BUDGET’, the Finance Minister on page 7 states that “The Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) completed and commissioned the following five new public libraries, bringing the total number across the country to 120.

VERDICT: Misleading
