66th Independence Day celebration: Nabdam education director urges children to take education seriously

0

The Nabdam District Director of Education, Madam Mary Magdalene Wompakeah, has encouraged students, pupils, and children of the district to attach  significant seriousness to education as that would enable them to be responsible citizens in the future.

She gave this encouragement in a speech to commemorate the 66th  Independence Day celebration at Zanlerigu in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region on Monday.

March 6, is a date set aside for all Ghanaians to celebrate the heroes and heroines who toiled to liberate Ghana from the shackles of colonial rule. In this regard, the yearly event is normally observed across the length and breadth of the country, with the district level not excluded.

Addressing the chiefs and people of Nabdam at the ceremony, Madam Wompakeah expressed great concern about the seemingly declining interest in education among the young people of the district, and encouraged them to discard galamsey and take a keen interest in  their education as that is the only avenue through which  they could  succeed in the future.

“A worrying situation in Nabdam is the way some children of schoolgoing age engage in economic activities to the detriment of their education. Many of these children prefer to engage in the cracking of stones or work in galamsey pits for money. These children should be convinced that formal education can make them professional miners instead.

How can we ascertain a brighter future if we do not encourage the young ones to take up lifelong investment?  Education is the number one investment that can sustain our lives. It takes perseverance, however, to reap the benefits of education,” she remarked.

This year’s event brought together a total of nineteen (19) basic school pupils and students of Kongo Senior High School. It also brought together traditional rulers, the security agencies, and many more, including the Tailors and Dressmakers Association of Ghana, Hairdressers and Beauticians Association of Ghana, the Textile Weavers of Ghana, and many others.

Madam Wompakeah further entreated parents to place  a priority on their wards’ education, stating that “we therefore need to invest in our young ones to guarantee their success in the future”.

She said there is a need for parents to  at all times endeavour to provide children with their basic educational needs instead of relying solely on the government’s Free SHS policy.

“Parents, let the education of your children be your priority. No one wants to bring children to this world to suffer. Help them secure their future by providing them with their basic needs for education. Don’t overrely on free education. Fulfil your part of parenthood while government supports you,” she added.

One of the pressing problems that threatens to hamper education in the Nabdam District lately is teenage pregnancy, with several teenage girls dropping out of school as a result of the menace.

Touching on the phenomenon, Madam Wompakeah appealed to all parents and guardians to always furnish children with their needs in order to forestall  the occurrences of teenage pregnancy and early marriages in the district.

She also advised all adolescents within the district to cherish education and abstain from premarital sex since abstinence has long lasting benefits.

This year’s anniversary was themed  “our unity, our strength, and our purpose”.

Independence Day celebration: Stephen Yakubu calls for unity among ‘Upper Easterners’

0

The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, has called for unity among the people of the Upper East Region.

Speaking at the 66th Independence Day anniversary at the St. John’s or Ramsey Park in Bolgatanga, Mr. Yakubu said there is a need to unite in order to foster the needed development in the region.

This year’s independence day anniversary is under the theme “Our Unity, Our Strength, Our Purpose.” In his address, the Upper East regional minister noted that the history of Ghana’s independence and that of many African countries was founded on the principles of social cohesion and national unity.

According to him, Upper Easterners should rise above political and sectarian differences and come together for the growth and development of the region.

“No nation develops without national unity. Let us therefore rise above political and sectarian differences and reason together in pursuit of our common interests on matters that concern us as a region. Our social fabric must be kept together for proper social conduct. We may have our differences in terms of style, belief, and wishes, but what binds us together is far greater and more important. We have to unite and close our ranks as a region and come together as a solid force to chart a sound social discourse that would be firmly anchored by the spirit of our founding.”

The 66th Independence Day parade saw all security personnel from the various security emergencies. Eight senior high schools, five private junior high schools, eleven public junior high schools, five private primary schools, and eleven public primary schools have participated in the parade to commemorate the day.

The independence day in Bolgatanga saw the presence of the Bolgatanga municipal Chief Executive Rex Asanga, assembly members from the municipality, heads of departments in the region, chiefs, and various religious leaders participating in the event.

I hope to change Binduri’s voting pattern – NDC Parliamentary hopeful

0

Issifu Mahmouh, a retired Police Officer who doubles as a private legal practitioner has stated his interest in leading the NDC to elections 2024. Lawyer Mahmoud also hopes to change Binduri’s voting pattern.

The Binduri Constituency is known for making frequent changes to their representatives in Parliament. Most Members of Parliament from the area have been known not to serve a second term. The situation is true for both major political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC).

This cycle is what Lawyer Mahmoud hopes to break. He believes that being dedicated to a course, bringing relief to the people of the area and being available are some of the major qualities he brings to bear.

Lawyer Mahmoud shared these strong convictions when he spoke to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show.

“For instance, if I am made MP for Binduri now, in the next 4 years, I would still be below 50 years and so I would be compelled to deliver even if it means sacrificing my personal wealth, interest, salary to do things, I have to do it because I would be held accountable. When I get the nod, I would do what is necessary for the people of Binduri to accept and retain me and end that system in Binduri where an MP hardly goes for a second term.”

According to Lawyer Mahmoud, there has been a general show of interest by young people in heading to Parliament to represent their people across the country because of the party’s attractive nature. Additionally, young people, he said, have come to realise that they need to take their own destiny into their own hands and begin to change the narrative.

Meanwhile, activities that characterise the election of parliamentary candidates for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been put on hold in two constituencies in the Upper East Region. They are the Pusiga and Binduri constituencies.

According to the NDC, there are a few issues that need to be ironed out within the constituencies.

Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, the Upper East Regional Communications Director for the NDC, said this when he spoke to Mark Smith on the Day Break Upper East Show.

“As we all know, the General Secretary made this point clear the last time, with regard to how it is going to be done. With regard to the number of constituencies, you know we are dealing with 275 but in the Upper East Region for instance, out of the 15 constituencies, 2 of them have been put on hold to make way for certain things to be done further before we can go ahead to conduct elections in those constituencies,” he said.

The NDC does not hold the MP seat in Binduri but holds the seat in Pusiga but according to Mr. Abdallah Salifu, “in the Pusiga area, we are looking at resolving certain internal issues there before we allow them to pick [forms].”

Retired Police Officer wants to be MP for Binduri; hopes to deal with insecurity issues, pursue vigorous dev’t

0

Issifu Mahmoud, the Chief Inspector, has expressed interest in leading the National Democratic Congress to victory in the Binduri Constituency polls in 2024. It is time for a young, dynamic professional like Mr. Mahmoud to lead the constituencies and utilise existing networks to pursue rapid human and physical development in the area, the lawyer said to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show.

Mr. Mahmoud retired from the Ghana Police Service in January 2023, to pursue his political ambition. At the time of retirement, he had attained the rank of Chief Inspector and was the lead prosecutor for the Service in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.

Hindered by the ethics of his previous profession, Mr. Mamhoud explained that it had become necessary to retire, pursue politics and bring relief to the people of Binduri.

With his more than two decades of experience with the Ghana Police Service, Mr. Mahmoud aims to address a variety of issues, one of which is how to deal with the local insecurity problem.

“Over 90 percent of the people are into farming and we rear a lot of animals. I am into rearing [of animals]. It is through animal rearing that you’re able to sell the animals and raise, for instance, an amount of Ghc10,000 in your pocket. Imagine that you wake up one morning only to realise that thieves have come to take your bulls or whatever animals away. If you are not even careful, you would die out of shock. The motorbikes are also their [the people of Binduri] means of transport or one of their biggest assets. These days, it [thievery] is very rampant. They steal motorbikes, they steal the cattle and whatever else comes to mind. There is a need to ensure that there is efficient security in the constituency to at least, if not completely eradicate this thing, bring it down to the barest minimum. So that the farmers will be able to put something in their pockets.

Additionally, the MP hopeful, is convinced that given the nod, he would be able to adequately deal with the issues around fertiliser inadequacies in his area.

“You would also realise that during the planting season, every farmer needs fertiliser and yet it has been a challenge. They hardly get fertilisers when the time is due. What I will do, when given the nod, is to ensure that I would engage the producers or businessmen who are into fertilisers to ensure that when the time comes, fertilisers would be made readily available and accessible to the farmers,” he said.

NDC parliamentary hopeful commissions 5th borehole in Nabdam District

0

A parliamentary candidate hopeful of the National Democratic Congress in the Nabdam, Lawyer Lamtiig Apanga has drilled and commissioned a hand pump borehole for the people of the Kotintaabig community in the Upper East Region.

The hand pump borehole is the 5th out of 10 boreholes the legal practitioner had promised to drill in the constituency. The other four were drilled at Zanlerigu, Asonge, Pitanga, and the Pelungu one being a mechanised borehole.

Speaking to the media, Lawyer Apanga said his decision to provide a potable source of water to the constituents is geared towards improving the lives of the constituents to “eradicate poverty and diseases since water is life”

He added that the water project in Nabdam could curtail the daily challenges the residents go through trekking for a long distance for water. Lawyer Apanga mentioned that his quest to serve the people of Nabdam in parliament was to ensure that the people of Nabdam get a fair share of the national cake.

“When I say I want to be Member of Parliament for Nabdam, I mean I want to offer leadership, service, and give my communities quality leadership, so they would appreciate that it is not serving by sitting on the seat as a Member of Parliament, but delivering work that would reflect what the people need”

Lawyer Apanga indicated that youth employment, skills training, sports, women empowerment, and education are among the few that he would be doing to “continuously sustain the development of Nabdam” when elected MP.

He used the opportunity to appeal to the constituents to give him the mandate to serve them as their next MP.

The chief of Kontitaabig, Naba Bilheesong Lagwongt thanked the NDC parliamentary hopeful for providing the constituents with a safe drinking water source. The chief on behalf of the residents pledged to zealously safeguard the project to ensure it serves its purpose.

Residents of Navrongo best people to assess my perfomance as MP – STC

0

The people of the Navrongo Central Constituency are being called upon to fairly assess the performance of the MP for the area, Sampson Tangombu Chiragiaa.

This results of such an assessment would decide whether the incumbent member of Parliament, Mr. Tangombu Chiragiaa wins the NDC primaries and then eventually wins the Navrongo seat on behalf of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or not.

“That is for you to decide. That is for the people of Navrongo to decide. They would be the best judge. As for me, normally, I say I cannot be my own judge,” Mr. Tangombu Chiragiaa said this when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show.

Meanwhile, 4 others have picked up forms and hope to contest the upcoming primaries.

They are Simon Akibange Aworigo, Stanislaus Alu Kadingdi, Sampson Tangombu Chiragia, Pius Ayemva Avio And Dr. Jacob Paarechuga Anankware.

According to the MP, competition is a show of true democracy and as such, he has no qualms with the other individuals who have picked up forms to contest him.

“It is normal. It is politics. It is democracy. The last time we were 5 and if this time we are still 5, I think it is normal. They are expressing their interest to let the people of Navrongo know that they are ready to serve them and the region.”

Whoever wins, would need the party’s support to cross the major hurdle in 2024, the MP said.

“It is just my hope that whoever wins, we should come together and support that person because Navrongo is bigger than an individual,” he said.

I’ll not rest until Navrongo stadium is complete – Sampson Tangombu Chiragiaa

0

Sampson Tangombu Chiragiaa, the Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, has firmly guaranteed the residents that he won’t stop working until the stadium, which was started under the current administration years ago and is eventually finished and made available for use.

It would be recalled that the MP filed a question that demanded the Sports Ministry’s attention on the floor of Parliament.

In the response of the Minister for the Sector, Mustapha Yussif, it was promised that the facility would be completed by close of year

“Rt Hon Speaker, the Youth Resource Centre/Sports Stadium forms part of the ten (10) regional youth facilities being constructed in the then existing ten (10) regions of Ghana. The initial plan was to start and complete all the ten centres within a year as of 2017. Strenuous efforts were made to ensure that deadlines were met. Unfortunately, due to resource constraints we missed our target.”

“Rt Hon Speaker, we have had to stagger the projects, especially, the second phase, by considering the completion of five (5) Centres each year, beginning from 2022. I am happy to inform this august house that the second phase of the first selected centres: Axim; Dunkwa- on-Offin; Wa; Dormaa Ahenkro and Koforidua are near completion with the necessary fittings and auxiliary works progressing steadily. bon For this year, 2023, the Youth Centres in Ho, Yendi, Nyinahini, Kaneshie and Navrongo are earmarked for completion. I wish to assure this august house that, the contractors will soon move to site and the project will complete by the close of the year,” the Minister for Youth and Sport, Mustapha Yussif, said in response to the questions raise by the MP for Navrongo Central.”

The assurances by the Minister were not enough for the MP for Navrongo Central. Mr. Tangombu Chiragiaa, speaking to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show mentioned that when he pressed the Minister further, the Minister gave the assurance that the contractor would be back on site by close of the month of within the first week of April, a situation the MP promised to keep a close eye on.

“My problem was not just about the completion. This project was supposed to be completed in 2018 yet years down the line, we are still here and don’t even know what is happening. The question I followed up with is, when would the contractor be going to site? If the contractor goes back to site, then we would be sure that at least someone is working on it. When I asked that, he said the contractor would be going to work on it by the end of March or early April,” he said.

The MP continued to say, “by the end of March or early April, I would be in his office [the Sports Minister], to ensure that for the stadium, the contractor is on site and work is ongoing.”

No need to apologise – Andrew Atariwini rubbishes NDC’s demand for apology for ‘gaffe’ in Bolga-Bawku road

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), is demanding a swift apology from the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The apology, according to the NDC, would go to appease the people of the Upper East Region and allow the NPP to make up for the ‘lies’ it told during its press conference about the current state of the Bolga-Bawku-Pulmakom road.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, the Upper East Regional Communication Officer for the NDC, Jonathan Abdallah Salifu stressed that it was unfortunate that the NPP would rather choose propaganda over facts.

“Let me first thank your station for bringing finality to this very issue. You would realise that when we ignited the debate, we kept on telling the people of the Upper East Region that our sources were credible and that we even had more information but it was just that we didn’t want to share it as at then. We also have to thank the Deputy Minister for telling the truth and not doing propaganda with it.”

“What I expect from the NPP, particularly, my brother, Peter Ayinbisa, and his team of communication officers, is an apology. It is necessary. Politically, they may not want to do it but I think it is the best. I say this because their own credibility is on the line. They were everywhere on radio defending what they claimed was the hard truth. Now, from what the deputy minister has explained, it has revealed that there was nothing like truth not to even talk about hard,” he said.

The NPP has however given a clear indication that it would not apologise and there is not a need to. Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, the Deputy Upper East Regional Communication Officer of the NPP, Andrew Atariwini, explained that the NPP’s press conference presented the issues similarly to what was presented by the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways.

“Absolutely not. There would be no need to apologise because everything that was said is [by the Deputy Minister] partially in affirmation to all the arguments we proffered and partially a new update that had emerged from the press conference. So there’s no need for an apology,” he said.

The brouhaha in the Upper East Region, for the past two weeks, surrounding the work on the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Polimakom road has been put to rest by the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Stephen Pambiin Jalulah.

The visible absence of the contractor on the stretch of road generated a big conversation in the region with many questioning the location of the contractor, and the reasons for the abandonment of site.

At a press conference, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the region lamented profusely over the abandonment of the project by the Queiroz Galvao MI Brazilian construction firm working on the road.

The NDC, in its press conference about the project, said the constructor had packed out of site because of the NPP government’s failure to honour all financial obligations to the contractor executing the 117.9 kilometre road.

But in a counter press conference by the NPP Communication Directorate, addressed by the Regional Communication Director, Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga, the claims of the NDC’s were heavily refuted.

But in an exclusive interview with Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, in order to bring finality to the controversies, the Deputy Roads and Highways Minister and Member of Parliament for Pru West, Stephen Pambiin Jalulah tied the absence of the contractor to the government’s inability to meet financial obligations.

According to Mr. Jalulah, the government has not been able to settle with the foreign financial institutions that are supporting the government of Ghana to be able to construct these major roads across the country.

“Because the government has not paid its obligations to the bank and other financial institutions, they have not also been able to fulfil their obligations to the contractors that are working on our roads. I want your listeners to know that we have different sources of funding for projects in Ghana, and most of the roads involve a lot of investment. We normally do not have the money, so we have to go outside the country to borrow from banks and pay interest on this money. The Bolga Bawku Polimakom road is one of such projects, so the government went outside to look for money to come and do the road.”

“So because the government has stopped paying interest on its loans to all foreign banks and financial institutions, those banks are not also able to supply or give money to the contractors who are working on our roads across the country. so if you have noticed that a contractor has left site, that is basically the reason.”

The Deputy Minister, Mr. Jalulah, also noted that the government is currently engaging with the financial institutions, and by the end of March 2023, the government would conclude negotiations with the banks and the way forward would be known. The Pru West MP assured the people of the Upper East Region that the Bolgatanga Bawku Polimakom road is of concern to the Akufo Addo government and it will be completed.

NDC commends Deputy Roads Minister for telling the truth about Bolga-Bawku road, chides Peter Ayinbisa for peddling propaganda

0

The largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress, is full of praise for the Deputy Roads Minister, Stephen Pambiin Jalulah, for what it describes as standing up and speaking the truth about the state of the Bolga-Bawku-Polmakom road. Meanwhile, the party has also chastised the Upper East Regional Communication Director, Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga, and his team for what is described as succumbing to propaganda instead of standing for the truth.

“Let me first thank your station for bringing finality to this very issue. You would realise that when we ignited the debate, we kept on telling the people of the Upper East Region that our sources were credible and that we even had more information, but it was just that we didn’t want to share it as at then. Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, the Upper East Regional Communication Officer for the NDC, made these comments when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show on Friday, March 3, 2023.

This is after the Deputy Minister for Roads brought finality to the debate about the road.

Additionally, the NDC demanded an apology from the NPP.

“What I expect from the NPP, particularly, my brother, Peter Ayinbisa, and his team of communication officers, is an apology. It is necessary.
