Bolgatanga: Sacking CK Akonnor won’t redeem Black Stars’ image – Football lovers

0
Coach C. K Akonnor

Some football lovers in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region have reacted to the sudden dismissal of the Black Stars coach, CK Akonnor by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The decision by the Executive Council of the GFA, they said was rather a misplaced action as sacking the head coach had nothing to do with redeeming the image of the team.

The Executive Council of the GFA on Monday, Septmber 13, 2021, terminated the appointment of the Coach and his two Assistants with immediate effect following the Black Stars’ Group G World Cup qualifying matches against Ethiopia and South Africa.

But reacting to the termination on A1 Radio, they suggested to the council to focus more on how it could overcome and resist political interference rather than the performance of head coaches.

According to them, the continued political interference has eaten deep into the football fraternity which often makes it difficult for appointed coaches to operate freely.

The situation, they say ought to be stopped if not, it will gradually turn the football fraternity specifically, the Black Stars into a useless team worse than its current state.

“For how long will the council continue to sack and replace coaches due to bad performance, the problem is not with the coaches the problem is too much political involvement. We know the council is aware of that yet it fails to address that but ather sees sacking of coaches as the way to go. And I must say that is ridiculing.” A football lover with the name Robert says.

Another football lover also believes that the GFA’s action was rather to protect its members’ image.

He said “The executive council knows very well that there is too much politics in Ghana football. The executive members know that appointed coaches have little power over the players as well as what goes on in the team. C. K Akonnor, for me, did his best and I don’t wish doom for the Black Stars but politics is too much there.”

“Until political hands are washed away, coaches will continue to be changed for the team. The least talk about Black Stars the better. And I must add that I don’t watch Ghana football again because we know our problem yet we will not confront it”, another football lover, Kwasi remarked.

Meanwhile, fingers are pointing that Milovan Rajevac has been asked to return and head the Black Stars.

Mr. Rajevac was a professional footballer and has been a head coach to the Black Stars from 2008–2010.

The Volta Regional Police Command has arrested three persons at Akatsi in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta region for their alleged involvement in recruitment fraud.

The three, Bernard Amenya, 18, Godsway Adzikah, 23, and Godson Wemegah 21, were arrested on September 14, 2021.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mrs Effia Tenge, Public Affairs Officer, Volta Regional Police Command in a release, said the arrest followed a fraudulent Facebook publication purported to have been created by the Volta Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mr Edward Oduro Kwarteng.

The release said the said publication was advertising to assist potential applicants to be enlisted into the Ghana Police Service.

It said preliminary investigation has revealed that many victims have paid various sums of money to the fraudsters with the hope of being favoured in the ongoing recruitment process.

The Command is not responsible for recruiting persons into the Service, as such, desperate applicants should be wary of protocol allocations being offered all over the place, the release said.

The release urged persons who had fallen victim to the said scam to report to the Command to assist in investigation and prosecution.

Examination irregularities upsetting WASSCE for school candidates

0

The 2021 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, which commenced smoothly across the country in August, is facing challenges of examination irregularities.

WAEC, at a press conference in Accra to update journalists on the conduct of the examination, said a number of examination irregularities have been recorded at some centres across the country.

Mr. George Ohene- Mantey, Head of Test Administration Division (TAD), WAEC, mentioned, “inside –examination- hall malpractice as a result of poor supervision and invigilation,” as major a malpractice being experienced in the WASSCE.

He said WAEC had also received reports suggesting the execution of pre-arranged plans to assist candidates to cheat by solving questions and distributing solutions to them in the examination hall.

Mr. George Ohene- Mantey said there had also been reports of smuggling of mobile phones into examination halls by candidates awaiting solutions from platforms they had made payments to.

He said there was also snapping of question papers at some centres and posting same on various WhatsApp platforms.

Mr. Ohene-Mantey said the activities of social media “cartels” were in full force with several versions of questions being circulated on social media platforms.

He said some of such online groups were: Ruth, Jerusalem, Eminent Link, Mr. Robert, SucessRoom, Mr. IUPAC, Brotherhood and WAEC Secret Helper.

Mr. Ohene-Mantey said the Council’s investigation team was tracking the websites and groups and said culprits would be dealt with.

He said those groups enticed candidates to part with money by posting several fake versions of questions, including past questions on social media.

The Head of TAD said some of the group’s post “actual questions on paid for, groups, after receipt and opening of question paper packets at the centre” with solved questions and posted on WhatsApp groups.

He said with the passing of the Cyber Security Act,2020 (Act 1036), the prosecution of operatives of the fraudulent groups would be facilitated.

“We want to urge parents, religious leaders and well-meaning people in society to join us in advising our wards to stay away from these WhatsApp/Telegram groups and focus on their books,” he stressed.

Ghana’s economy shows strong growth prospects- Moody’s, S.P

0

Two Credit Rating Agencies – Moody’s Investor Services (Moody’s) and Standard and Poor (S & P) have affirmed Ghana’s Credit Rating at B3 and B- respectively.

The Rating Agencies also maintained Ghana’s outlook.

A statement issued by the Public Relations unit of the Ministry of Finance and made available to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said the credit rating agencies, in making their decisions considered Ghana’s improving growth prospects, resilient external sector performance, and continued access to the capital markets (domestic and international] as essential factors in maintaining the rating and the outlook.

Notably, the two rating agencies recognised the efforts of Government to “build back better” through the innovative Ghana CARES (Obaatanpa) Programme, it said.

The statement noted that both credit rating agencies acknowledged that Ghana’s economy was recovering from the effects of the pandemic faster than its peers, adding that government should, however, focus more on growth and the implementation of the Ghana CARES Programme.

S. P, in particular, it said, maintained Ghana’s rating on the back of the growing economic prospects and the relatively transparent and responsive political institutions.

The stable outlook balances risks from fiscal and external financing pressures against the country’s medium-term economic growth prospects, it added.

Both credit rating agencies, however, raised concerns about Ghana’s debt affordability and levels, but the Government said it was committed to debt sustainability and fiscal consolidation.

“As such, between 2019 and 2021, the Government has undertaken various liability management measures to proactively reduce the external debt stock and the interest expense burden. As a result, the Government bought back and retired over US$900m worth of Eurobonds, which has reduced the external debt stock significantly,” the statement assured.

On the domestic front, it said Government continued to conduct active liability management, saying this year alone, an amount of GH¢4.84 billion had been used for domestic liability management, which involved the buy-back of three-year and five-year bonds.

“This has reduced the refinancing and rollover risks and interest cost inherent in the public debt portfolio. Our strategy has also positively impacted the interest rates on the primary and secondary securities markets,” it added.

The Ministry assured the public that Government was doing its best to vaccinate the majority of adult Ghanaians to achieve herd immunity, a need that had become more imperative with the seeming third wave.

To that end, it said Ghana was in constant talks with the African Vaccination Acquisition Trust (AVAT) for the supply of 17 million Johnson and Johnson doses.

Ghana is among the 27 African countries that have made the initial deposit and completed the legal requirements, readiness checklist and emergency use authorisation required.

The first batch of the vaccine is expected this month under the programme.

The statement reiterated that, Government’s primary aim, especially during the onset of the pandemic, had been to save lives and livelihoods, as such, it said government had implemented various life-saving initiatives and interventions in 2020/21 to protect the general population against the pandemic’s adverse social and economic effects.

The interventions, however, it noted, had led to significant unbudgeted expenditures and elevated debt levels.

“However, Ghana’s economic fundamentals remain strong despite these interventions and recovery prospects are high. This is reflected in the positive narrative by both rating agencies and other organizations such as the IMF on how well Ghana has managed the economy under the Pandemic,” the statement said.

It added that, in addition, Ghana’s medium-term plan was underpinned by a robust strategy to safeguard growth beyond five per cent over the medium term, return to the fiscal path of under a five per cent of Gross Domestic Product fiscal deficit and attain a positive primary balance by 2024.

“We will sustain our progress and accelerate this through the GHS100 billion Ghana CARES transformation programme within the general policy framework of Ghana Beyond Aid and certainly beyond the pandemic,” the statement assured.

Government’s delay in supplying fertilizers responsible for possible food short- Inusah Fuseini

0
Inusah Fuseini

The Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central Constituency in Northern Region, Inusah Fuseini, has cast blames on the Ministry of food and agriculture for its delay in the supply of fertilizers to farmers; saying could be responsible for the projected possible food shortage in the country.

According to him, the delay in supplying the fertilizers has negatively affected many farmers in this year’s farming season.

Speaking on the Daybreak Upper East on A1 Radio, Mr. Inusah believes the reports that suggest possible food shortage and price hikes in the country are likely to happen.

He explained that the Government delayed the supply of fertilizers to farmers when crops were due for fertilizer application, which compelled farmers to rely on the open market for fertilizer at higher prices.

“For instance, in May this year, some of the maize fields were due for further application but the government’s planting for food and jobs project or policy failed in bringing fertilizer at the time that fertilizer was needed on the maize fields. So yields will be significantly lower.”

The former MP further observed that if farmers are not able to meet the demand of consumers in terms of availability of farm produce in the markets, the demand will outweigh supply which will have a relative impact on the pricing of these produce causing it to hike.

In order to curb the situation, He said “Government must make a conscious effort to buy excess food on the market and store same for the lean season. Government after buying will know its capacity; whether it has enough in stock to ensure that the prices of food stuffs do not rice to unacceptable levels. If the government comes to the conclusion that, it has not bought from the market enough food for food security, Government has to import to augment whatever it has bought and stored.”

Diamond Winners Microfinance: Depositors in Upper East Region cry to gov’t to refund their GHS 2 Billion locked up funds

0

Aggrieved depositors of the defunct Diamond Winners Microfinance Company in the Upper East Region have appealed to government to as a matter of urgency come to their aid and release their locked up funds.

The disgruntled customers numbering over two thousand said since the collapse of the company, the government and the Bank of Ghana have been reluctant in releasing over GHS 2 Billion to the affected depositors.

Just like DKM, Diamond Winners Microfinance Limited during its operation offered customers an interest rate ranging between 50-60 percent of their deposit per month.

But the Bank of Ghana in its quest to clean up the banking sector closed down Diamond Winners Microfinance Limited in 2015 and a moratorium slapped on its operation; resulting in the locking up of depositors’ funds.

The aggrieved customers said the relaxed attitude by the government and Bank of Ghana to help them to retrieve the monies was worrying; a situation that has largely caused many of them to die prematurely and others turned out to be frustrated.

The customers of the defunct microfinance company also faulted the Bank of Ghana for giving a temporal permit for the company to operate without strict supervision.

Speaking at a press conference held in Bolgatanga, the customers asked the government and for that matter, President Akufo-Addo to come to their aid.

Gumah William Osman, who spoke on behalf of the customers said “Bank of Ghana did not take measures to safeguard the interest of customers before and after the closure. The sad part is that the Bank of Ghana is paying other defunct microfinance companies but excluded Diamond winners why?”

“Many of us are retirees and as of now, we cannot even offer to purchase needed drugs for our chronic illnesses because we don’t have money again. Some of us used our children school fees to invest; now there is no money for them to further their education because we are broke.” He added.

Another customers, Mercy Adongo said “I used to have women group, fellow women coming together to form a group and take loans for our business. So, in fact the money that we were using for our business and whatever we were using all locked up at diamond winners. Now, my business is down, my shop is now empty in fact, my child had school admission but due to this problem, she could not go. So, in fact, we are appealing to the government to come to our aid and help us. Poor women as we are; we still owe banks and they are following us. We have been running up and down dodging them but for how long can we continue that.”

Sylvester Zakpalah-Dere Angwanonah an affected customer also noted that “When the company came it was based on documents they displayed in their office that convinced most of us to put in our hard-earned monies hoping to get something. I for once, the money I had was meant for my daughter’s education outside, I invested it into the company, hoping to make something small, but here is the situation the money is gone, she has not gone to the states. So, I only thank God that she has kept me alive till today.”

He continued that “Some colleagues who could not bear it have to commit suicide. Some have also developed various health conditions and have died out of it. Marriages have been disintegrated. So many people like me; their children’s education have gone to the dogs. So, we are pleading with the president to bail us out.”
