Sunday Adongo Aberigo,a 27-year old resident of Yorogo-gonro in the Upper East region was on Tuesday beaten to pulp in Kongo in the Nabdam district for allegedly stealing batteries that power solar street lights in the area.

Aberigo was pounced on and arrested by an angry mob in the company of two other suspected thieves, Razak Alowre and another only identified as Abooho who managed to escape and are currently at large.

He has sustained several degrees of injury and has since been admitted at the Nangode hospital where he is expected to receive treatment.

Speaking to A1radio’s news team, Chief of the community, Sapaanab S.W.O Dukdon, said they have been battling with these instances of solar battery theft in the area for some months now.

He added that two months ago, two batteries of the solar light were stolen and that necessitated the formation of a volunteering group in the community to patrol the area at night.

He mentioned that a futile attempt was made by the thieves Saturday to steal the third battery and that another attempt was made on Tuesday dawn by the thieves but fortunately, the youth volunteers arrested one of the thieves whereas two others escaped.

Sapaanab noted that although he categorically warned his volunteers against instant justice, the alleged thief was beaten because he was chased to Sualega a neighboring village and mentioned that the police at Nagode came to see the suspect but they failed to carry him to the hospital because they did not have means of transport.

The police however have taken charge of the situation and the suspect will assist in investigations when he recovers.
