National Health Insurance Authority embarks on sensitisation exercise for MyNHIS App

0

MyNHIS is a new app that seeks to provide a mechanism for the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to fulfill its statutory obligations by improving new experiences for NHIS members, saving them time and money.

During a health walk within the Bolgatanga Township to educate residents on the benefits and usage of the application, Shei Fuseini, the Upper East Regional Monitoring and Evaluation Manager of NHIA, stated that the app helps citizens access all NHIS services without physically visiting various offices across the country.

Mr. Fuseini mentioned that, leveraging the digitalization drive in the country, the authority, as part of its 20th-anniversary celebration, deems it necessary to sensitize Bolgatanga residents about the app.

“We want the general public to avoid the physical presence of our offices across the country. So based on that, we are taking advantage of the digitalized system now put in place in the country so that the public can benefit from it. So we are taking that advantage to educate the general public about the MyNHIS App.”

The walk covered Bolgatanga Old and New Markets, the main lorry station, among other places. Mr. Fuseini mentioned that, through their engagement, the public has accepted and endorsed the app, stating that it will be a game-changer.

Students from the Bolgatanga Nursing Training College, who joined the health walk to educate the people, said the new application, together with the already existing short code, will help people from far and near to have easy access to health care delivery.

Navrongo Central MP supports twins who lost their mother with Ghc4,000

0

The Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sampson Tangombu Chiragia, has extended a helping hand to a pair of four-month-old twins who tragically lost their mother just weeks ago at the Kologo-zuo Community Health Facility in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality.

According to the legislator, he heard the information through social media when a community health nurse posted about the infants, calling for support.

“I was heartbroken when I heard the news, so I quickly mobilized something for the family. I know it is not easy, especially when I heard that their grandmother, who is now 85 years old, is taking care of them. I was so devastated. Of course, I know that this token is not enough, but in the meantime, it can serve a purpose.”

He emphasized that the donation was a modest token intended to assist the family with pressing financial needs, adding the need for collective support to ensure the well-being and healthy development of the infants who now find themselves without a mother.

The MP also urged the public to join him in keeping the welfare of the bereaved twins in their thoughts and prayers.

“I call on you all, your prayers, and good thoughts to always be on these infants for a healthy life so that they will grow and become the future leaders that the country needs.”

The swift response from the Member of Parliament, family members said, came in handy and underscores a personal commitment to the well-being of those he serves.

They, however, prayed for the legislator and NDC members for their thoughtfulness, adding that the donation will not only ease immediate financial burdens but also symbolize a community united in empathy and care.

Talensi: We’ll engage heavily ahead of 2024 parliamentary election – Robert Alibo

0

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Talensi Constituency, Robert Alibo, has explained that the party, ahead of the 2024 general election, would engage heavily, make all the right decisions, and do all it can to win the seat for the NPP for the second time.

Mr. Alibo made these comments when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show with Mark Smith today, Wednesday, December 6, 2023.

“These are early days yet, but we need to engage extensively and plan together. This would probably be something I would lead, but I would need ideas from everyone to execute the campaign to wrestle the seat from the NDC,” he said.

Mr. Alibo added that the party has begun the reconciliation after the election, a process that would see all individuals and blocs within the party come under one umbrella.

“The reconciliation process is already underway. To find the honorable DCE visit me at home, and to see me go to his place and accept whatever outcome that came about, it gives me an opportunity to show grace to all other people, all other supporters, and contestants so that we can walk into victory come 2024.”

Mr. Alibo is convinced he won the election because he had stayed true to his message of being a better leader and lobbying for major development for the people of the area.

Mr. Alibo won the parliamentary primaries ahead of the DCE for the area, Thomas Duanab Wuni Pearson and the Deputy Director for the Northern Development Authority, William Zoogah.

It would be recalled that the NPP in the Upper East Region conducted primaries in 10 constituencies: Bolgatanga Central, Builsa South, Navrongo, Chiana-Paga, Bongo, Talensi, Nabdam, Zebila, Garu, and Tempane constituencies.

In three constituencies, namely Pusiga, Bolgatanga East, and Builsa North Constituencies, candidates went unopposed.

Elections are currently on hold in the Bawku Central Constituency.

NRSA launches road safety campaign in Upper East Region ahead of festivities

0

The Acting Upper East Regional Head of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Zachariah Laari, has called on road users, including pedestrians and riders, as well as drivers, to exercise caution on the roads, particularly ahead of and during the festive period.

To further educate road users on proper road use, the Upper East Regional Road Safety Authority has launched a campaign dubbed “Stop Speeding, Stay Alive.”

Speaking to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, Mr. Laari explained that the NRSA has always educated road users on the proper use of the road but had to launch a campaign because of the special circumstances during the yuletide.

“We always do this education. Yesterday we launched our campaign with a specific focus on speeding. We realized that 90 percent of our crashes result from speeding. Basically, our main target for this festive period is overspeeding. However, we know that there are other factors like wrongful overtaking, fatigue driving, inconsiderate driving, people not practicing defensive driving, and all.”

“During this festive season, there is a lot of vehicular movement. When you have a lot of vehicles moving, you have a lot of people moving along too, so we have to be extra cautious,” he said.

Mr. Laari reminded passengers of their role in ensuring that drivers follow road traffic regulations while transporting them from one point to another. He also reminded drivers of their role in ensuring they adhere to road traffic regulations.

Meanwhile, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has revealed that the number of people killed in road accidents has increased from 35 in 2022 to 55 in 2023. Additionally, the number of vehicles involved in road accidents has risen from 184 in 2022 to 196 in 2023. Pedestrian knockdowns have increased from 17 in 2022 to 25 within the same period in 2023.

John Quarshie, Principal Transport Officer for the Upper East Regional Road Safety Authority, shared these statistics when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show today.

Mr. Quarshie explained that there had been an increase in fatalities, the number of vehicles involved in road accidents, and pedestrian knockdowns, largely due to overspeeding.

“Basically, it is overspeeding. Of the 122 casualties we recorded, if you consider the vehicles that contributed, motorcycles contributed about 89 percent. Commercial vehicles also contributed 5 percent, and private vehicles contributed 6 percent. If motorbikes are contributing 89 percent, and out of that, we have 54 that are fatal crashes, that should tell you that when motorbikes crash and people lose their lives, it is overspeeding because the impact was great. We believe that speeding causes 90 percent of road crashes in the region,” he said.

Road crash fatalities increase from 35 in 2022 to 55 in 2023 – NRSA

According to the NRSA, streetlights on the principal streets have been helpful in making the situation slightly better than it could have been.

“You would record that in Bolgatanga, on the principal streets, we didn’t have the streetlights functioning, and so we were recording higher pedestrian knockdowns. Since we had the streetlights working within the town, particularly the main stretch up to Sumbrungu through to Navrongo, you would realize that pedestrian knockdowns have come down. That means that night visibility has improved,” he said.

Meanwhile, the NRSA has launched a road safety campaign ahead of the festive period.

National Communications Authority schools residents in Upper East Region on its mandate

0

The National Communications Authority (NCA), as part of its efforts to foster transparency and promote public awareness of its activities, organized a stakeholders’ forum in the Upper East Region.

The forum sought to sensitize the public about the regulatory body’s multifaceted activities while also enlightening consumers about their rights and responsibilities in the ever-evolving telecommunications landscape.

Addressing participants, Mr. Kwame Gyan, the Deputy Director of Consumer and Corporate Affairs at the NCA, highlighted the diverse roles played by the NCA in regulating and overseeing the communication sector.

He explained the importance of ensuring that the public is well-informed about the regulatory processes, spectrum management, licensing, and compliance standards that the NCA upholds.

“The aim is to establish a foundation for a more informed and empowered consumer base,” he said.

The Deputy Director also emphasized the NCA’s commitment to international standards, noting that adherence to these benchmarks is crucial for maintaining a robust and competitive communication industry.

Mr. Gyan encouraged active participation from stakeholders, urging them to engage in constructive dialogues to enhance the effectiveness of the NCA’s regulatory framework.

The forum also allowed participants to ask questions, seek clarification on regulatory matters, and provide feedback.

One of the participants, Hamiza Amidu, Municipal Chief Executive of Bawku, questioned how the NCA can regulate online and social media content, specifically content that seeks to influence negative feedback.

According to him, most people are using Facebook and other social media to propagate conflict content in the Bawku zone without being present in the area.

But in response, the deputy director, Mr. Gyan, assured that efforts were underway to bridge such gaps as an Authority.

The forum, however, brought together key stakeholders, Municipal and District Chief Executives, industry experts, and the general public.

Diana Aburiya confident she’ll snatch Bongo seat from NDC, citing her popularity over NDC candidate

0

Diana Aduko Aburiya Asuure, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate-elect for the Bongo constituency, has expressed unwavering confidence in securing victory in the 2024 general elections. Madam Aburiya attributes her optimism to annexing the Bongo seat from the NDC, saying that her popularity among the constituents gives her an edge over the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Lawyer Charles Bawa-Dua.

The Member of Parliament for Bongo, Edward Bawa, lost the parliamentary primaries to lawyer Bawa, who is leading the NDC in the Bongo constituency for the first time. It is against this backdrop that Madam Aburiya, who contested the NPP primaries three consecutive times and led the NPP in the 2012 general elections, said she is well-marketed enough to win the seat for the NPP.

“I have been marketed enough. The constituents know my ability; they know. And this time around, the NDC is fielding a new candidate, somebody who has never contested the general elections. I am better marketed than he has been,” she stated.

Madam Aburiya emerged victorious in the NPP parliamentary primaries held over the weekend, earning the party’s mandate to contest the 2024 general elections. She secured 350 votes, while A-ugidimah Frank Aborigo had 232 votes and Mba Asalma Richard had 19 votes.

In an interview with A1 Radio, following her success in the NPP primaries, Madam Aburiya believes that her familiarity with local issues and her active engagement with residents give her an advantage over the NDC candidate.

According to Madam Aburiya, the NPP has always lost the Bongo parliamentary seat because the party “continues to field new candidates each time there is an election. But this time around, the delegates have decided to field somebody who has ever contested a general election in Bongo.”

“The other constituencies in the region that we have had MPs for the NPP, if you look at the terrain, it was the same thing that happened. Those constituencies decided to repeat the same candidates in the subsequent elections, and that has yielded results,” she added.

Madam Aburiya acknowledged the warm reception she had gotten from the two other candidates she went into the parliamentary contest with and called for unity among the party members to annex the seat that is currently occupied by the NDC.

Tempane: What’s Kpemka coming to do? Lydia Akanvariba beat him back to back – Jonathan Abdallah

0

“Joseph Dindiok Kpemka was one of the most influential people in the Akufo-Addo government before. He had everything to himself and could do a lot for the people. He was still beaten mercilessly by a first-timer. Someone who was not a branch executive. In fact, nobody knew her in the constituency. She only came once in a while to support her husband in politics. That was just all, but she was able to beat Kpemka back to back. I don’t know what Kpemka is coming to do again.”

Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, Upper East Regional Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), made these comments in connection with the election of Joseph Dindiok Kpemka as the Parliamentary Candidate for Tempane in the Upper East Region. Mr. Kpemka goes against the NDC incumbent MP, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba.

Speaking with Mark Smith on the Day Break Upper East Show, Mr. Abdallah Salifu explained that the re-election of Mr. Kpemka as PC for the NPP shows that nothing is expected to change in the 2020 general election.

Mr. Abdallah Salifu’s position was, however, strongly contested by the Regional Communication Director of the NPP, Peter Ayinbisa, who suggested that the re-election of Mr. Kpemka affords the people of the area the opportunity to compare the terms of both Mr. Kpemka and Ms. Akanvariba.

He spoke on the same platform with Mark Smith.

“It is a good judgment for the people of Tempane. They have had four years of Kpemka, and they have the four years of the current MP. The people can now compare and see who has helped them more. Who has developed their communities more? If you put both of them on the same scale, I can tell you that Kpemka has brought more development to the people than the current MP.”

“Consider the projects he has brought and the number of people he has helped to get jobs. If it comes to the major elections, it would be a comparison of what Alhaji Bashiru and Kpemka have done against what the MP has done,” he said.

You can’t be MP forever – Elvis Awonekai to Isaac Adongo

0

The Parliamentary Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bolgatanga Central Constituency, Elvis Atia Awonekai, has expressed deep concerns about the posturing and what has been described as careless statements by NDC MP for Bolga, Isaac Adongo.

When the NPP PC, Mr. Awonekai, spoke to Mark Smith on the Day Break Upper East Show on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, he recalled some comments that were made by the MP, suggesting that Mr. Adongo was confident he would be the MP for the area until he decided otherwise and would then bring someone to take over from him. This implied that no other candidate but him, Mr. Adongo, was worthy of the seat.

Mr. Awonekai expressed utter disgust, saying, “somebody told him that the NPP primaries were coming up, and he said he would be MP until he wanted no more and then bring someone to take over from him. You cannot be this arrogant. You cannot make this careless statement. You cannot say that.”

“Everything that has a beginning always has an end. I never expected him to say that,” he added.

Elvis Atia Awonekai polled 618 out of the possible 794 votes in the Bolgatanga Central Constituency.

Mr. Awonekai suggested that the NDC was not fair to Thomas Akurugu, who had earlier expressed interest in contesting the parliamentary primaries for the NDC in the Bolgatanga Central area.

“The NDC didn’t do well. They should have allowed Akurugu to contest like they did in Bongo. Who would have thought that Edward Bawa would have lost that particular seat? I can tell you that if Thomas would have contested Isaac Adongo in Bolga, Isaac would have been a goner by now.”

If NPP unites in Builsa South, Dr. Apaak will suffer – Peter Ayinbisa

0

The Communication Director for the NPP, Peter Aynibisa, is confident that the current Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, can face a tough challenge if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) manages to unite ahead of the 2024 general election.

He made these comments when he spoke to A1 Radio’s Mark Smith on the Day Break Upper East Show. This is after the conclusion of parliamentary primaries for the party in the Upper East Region.

In the Builsa South Constituency, Daniel Kwame Gariba, the current DCE, won the primaries with 183 votes. His other competitor, Thomas Kwesi Adama, polled 135 votes.

After being declared the winner, Daniel Kwame Gariba said, “Winning an internal election for the second time as a sitting DCE is not an easy task. Due to the nature of my work, people think I have a lot of resources as a DCE and do not want to release them, and this may go against me. I, therefore, count myself lucky for winning the election the second time, and I thank God and the supporters for the mandate.”

But in a quick response, Mr. Ayinbisa, the Communication Director for the party in the Upper East Region, called on the DCE to urgently take actions to get Mr. Adama on his side ahead of the 2024 general election. If this is done, Mr. Ayinbisa believes that the party could win the seat.

“If we look at this and also consider the dynamics of politics in that area, Dr. Apaak would suffer for it. If there is unity, absolute unity in that area, Apaak would lose. I am urging Gariba and all the people who matter in that area, and the council of elders, to step in because Adama is a very keen person to watch. You cannot take that away from him. People didn’t expect Adama to make as much gain as he did. What he got is not a small number. It means that there is a certain constituent that supports him.

The NPP in the Upper East Region conducted primaries in 10 constituencies; Bolgatanga Central, Builsa South, Navrongo, Chiana-Paga, Bongo, Talensi, Nabdam, Zebila, Garu, and Tempane constituencies.

In three constituencies, namely Pusiga, Bolgatanga East, and Builsa North Constituencies, candidates went unopposed.

Elections are currently on hold in the Bawku Central Constituency.
