NPP UE Regional Chairman calls on delegates to vote for candidate who’ll unite party in Navrongo

0

The Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Anthony Namoo, has urged delegates in Navrongo to approve a candidate capable of uniting the party for a takeover of the parliamentary seat from the opposition National Democratic Congress.

Mr. Namoo, who noted that the constituency has always been the stronghold of the NPP, said the party lost the seat to the NDC because of disunity.

While he urged the delegates to elect a suitable candidate, he has called for unity before and after the primary to build the formidable front the party needs to reclaim the parliamentary seat.

The NPP in the Upper East Region is conducting primaries in 10 constituencies, namely Bolgatanga Central, Builsa South, Navrongo, Chiana-Paga, Bongo, Talensi, Nabdam, Zebila, Garu, and Tempane constituencies.

In three constituencies, namely Pusiga, Bolgatanga East, and Builsa North Constituencies, candidates went unopposed.

Elections are currently on hold in the Bawku Central Constituency.

It would be recalled that the Regional Secretary of the NPP, who also serves as a Parliamentary Candidate (PC) aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bolgatanga Central Constituency, Elvis Atia Awonekai, was accused of corrupting the electoral process by offering Ghc500 to each of the 794 delegates.

These allegations were made by Agana Bawa Rashid, another candidate. He voiced these accusations during a conversation with A1 Radio’s Joshua Asaah regarding the ongoing parliamentary primaries in the Upper East Region.

Meanwhile, Elvis Figo Awonekai has responded to the allegations. He explained that any aspirant who cannot raise at least Ghc500 for delegates to transport themselves has no business vying for any elective positions.

He, however, denied spending as much as Ghc500 on each delegate. He explained that his company team, however, reached out to delegates and offered them a token for transportation.

Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited is supporting Farmers’ Day celebrations across four assemblies in the Upper East Region with a substantial sum of 110,000 cedis in value of items to honor farmers.

This significant donation has been given to the assemblies to honor hardworking farmers within the company’s catchment area in commemoration of Farmers’ Day. The beneficiary districts include Talensi, Nabdam, Bolgatanga East, and Bongo.

The items include 4 tricycles, 60 pieces of knapsack sprayers, 70 pairs of Wellington boots, 100 pieces of cutlasses, 5 high-density mattresses, 9 boxes of key soap, and 15 bags of fertilizer.

Speaking to A1 Radio before the donation exercise, Emmanuel Kofi Adusei, the Community and Social Responsibility Manager of Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, stated that the donation is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility to appreciate the contribution of farmers in the region and Ghana as a whole.

“Cardinal Namdini Mining appreciates the contribution of farmers because, without them, we would not be alive. They provide food for us, and some of them, we have to move to have space for our activities. This is our way of contributing and supporting them for the sustainability of food in the region and the country.”

Mr. Adusei urged farmers to maintain the motor tricycles to ensure they last longer. The Talensi District Coordinating Director, Clifford Baba Atanga, expressed gratitude to Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited for its generous gesture.

“Indeed, you have been supporting the district in countless ways. Farmers’ Day, in particular, is an occasion that you never cease to support us. Today’s presentation is yet another manifestation of your commitment to supporting the progress of this district,” he stated.

Mr. Atanga emphasized the need for a deepened mutual relationship between the assembly and the company, adding that the assembly would continue to offer its support to the company “to ensure that all the efforts the company is making will be completed within the time for actual mining to take place.”

Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, a Chinese firm and subsidiary of Shandong Gold, operates in the Talensi district of the Upper East. The company was granted a license for 15 years to undertake surface mining, with the expectation that it will pour its first gold in the last quarter of 2024.

For the 15-year mine life, it is estimated that the company will generate 150 million tonnes of ore for 5 million ounces of gold.

PNC supports CI limiting importation of rice, sugar tripe et al

0

The opposition Peoples’ National Convention (PNC) has commended the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the government of Ghana for their intention to present a Constitutional Instrument (C.I) to Parliament, which seeks to restrict the importation of certain goods and products into the country.

In a statement signed by the General Secretary of the party, Madam Janet Asana Nabla, the PNC believes that the policy will create jobs for the teeming unemployed youth in Ghana. Madam Nabla emphasized the urgent need for both the governing NPP and the larger opposition party NDC to treat the C.I as a national issue rather than a political one.

“We firmly believe that this policy should be treated as a national issue rather than a divisive matter between the NPP and NDC. The ongoing disagreements between the two major political parties only serve to impede progress, while the Ghanaian youth suffer the consequences. Without drastic measures, job opportunities will remain a mirage for our youth, whether it is PNC, NPP, or NDC that is in power.”

The CI will compel importers of 22 restricted items, such as poultry, rice, sugar, diapers, and animal intestines (commonly called yemuadie at local eateries), to seek licenses from a committee set up by the Minister of Trade and Industry.

The PNC General Secretary further urges individuals, civil organizations, religious bodies, and youth groups to mount pressure on Members of Parliament to see through the C.I before them.

“The PNC calls on civil society organizations, the Ghanaian youth, religious bodies, and freedom fighters who advocate for the welfare of the youth to exert pressure on Parliament to pass the CI. Parliament must remember the youth who lined up at polling stations to vote for them and prioritize their interests.”

The statement said future PNC governments will go further by completely banning the importation of all products that can be produced locally to prioritize job creation and motivate Ghanaian youth and local producers.

NDC demands removal of Stephen Yakubu as Upper East Regional Minister

0

The National Democratic Congress’s communications bureau in the Upper East Region has demanded that President Nana Akufo Addo remove the Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, from office over his recent comments on the NDC flag bearer’s 24-hour economy policy proposal.

Mr. Yakubu, during a festival celebration in Sakote in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region, made comments that suggested men might not be able to have sexual relations with their wives if the 24-hour economy were implemented.

Addressing a press conference at the party’s Regional office in Zuarungu, the Regional Communications Officer, Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, stated that the comments made by the Regional Minister exposed his lack of competence to foster the development of the region.

He said, “In light of these, our position is that the dishonorable Stephen Yakubu has outlived his usefulness as a Regional Minister in the face of the growing challenges that the people of the region continue to encounter daily. The challenges that confront us in the region require someone with the needed depth and intellectual prowess, not the jocular and disastrous minister like him. If he and his appointor take the people of the Upper East Region seriously, he should have long resigned or been fired from his post. It is completely unacceptable to continue to expend the scarce resources of the taxpayer on a clueless leader like Stephen Yakubu.”

Mr. Abdallah Salifu has therefore issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Regional Minister to apologize to the people of the region or face a series of demonstrations.

He said, “We in the NDC take serious exception to the unrepentant attitude of the NPP and its leaders at launching needless scathing attacks on well-meaning Ghanaian women at the least opportunity they find. We, therefore, unequivocally condemn the backward and stereotypical attack and attempt by the dishonorable Stephen Yakubu and the NPP to portray and present the women of this region as mere sex objects. We thus demand an immediate retraction and apology from Mr. Yakubu within 48 hours. If the minister fails to comply with this, it will prompt civil actions, including massive demonstrations against him, to emphasize our demand for respect and equality for all.”

Mr. Abdallah Salifu, touching on the military brutality that happened a few weeks ago in Garu, demands compensation for victims of the brutality.

“Again, we demand swift action to ensure victims of military brutality in Garu are properly treated and compensated, as the head of the Regional Security Council (RESEC), whose negligence caused the unfortunate incident.”

“I owe no one an apology” – Upper East Regional Minister defends controversial comments on 24-hour economy

0

The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, has mounted a spirited defense for his recent remarks on the 24-hour economy proposal put forth by former President John Dramani Mahama.

Mr. Yakubu, who has faced intense scrutiny for suggesting that men might abstain from sexual relations with their wives if the 24-hour economy were implemented, asserted during a sod-cutting ceremony in Bolgatanga on Tuesday that he owed no one an apology for speaking what he deemed the truth.

The minister’s comments, made amidst the backdrop of a growing discourse on the feasibility and implications of a 24-hour economy, have sparked a heated debate on social and traditional media platforms.

Critics argue that Yakubu’s statement is not only inappropriate but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes about gender roles and relationships.

Addressing the media during the ceremony, Minister Yakubu reiterated his stance, explaining that he intended to highlight the practical challenges that such a work model could pose to familial relationships.

He stated, “I stand by my words. We must have an open conversation about the potential consequences of policies. If we implement a 24-hour economy, it will have ripple effects on various aspects of our lives, including family dynamics.”

His comments, especially from the Women’s Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Nabdam Constituency, were said to reinforce outdated gender norms and divert attention from the substantive issues surrounding the 24-hour economy proposal. They demanded an immediate apology from the minister.

But in response to such calls for an apology, Mr. Yakubu remained resolute, stating, “I owe no one an apology for speaking the truth. We must engage in honest and sometimes uncomfortable dialogues to make informed decisions about our future.”

Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly hands over 1.2-Kilometre hospital bungalow road for construction

0

The Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly has awarded a contract for the reconstruction of a deplorable road at the hospital bungalow in the Bolga-Soe community.

The 1.2-kilometer stretch, which has been a source of frustration for residents due to its deteriorated condition, is poised to undergo a transformative makeover under Malsons Company Limited.

Speaking to the media, the Municipal Chief Executive, Rex Asanga, expressed confidence in the company’s ability to execute the project efficiently.

According to him, the deplorable nature of the road has not only hampered daily commutes for residents but also posed challenges for emergency services accessing the hospital bungalow.

He added that the road construction is expected to be completed in a 9-month construction period, providing much-needed relief to the community.

Mr. Asanga, however, issued a caution to Malsons Company Limited to prioritize quality work to ensure the longevity and sustainability of the reconstructed road.

The road is also expected to have a bitumen surface.

In response to the call for quality, Mahamoud Iddrisu, the representative from Malsons Company Limited, assured the Municipal Chief Executive and the community of their dedication to delivering top-notch work.

He pledged that the company would adhere to the specified timelines and complete the project within 9 months.
