Ajoa Yeboah-Afari receives Millennium Excellence Award for Journalism and Media Personality

0

The Millennium Excellence Foundation (MEF) has conferred on Madam Ajoa Yeboah-Afari, former President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the coveted ‘Millennium Excellence Award for Journalism and Media Personality’, in Kumasi.

This was in recognition of her long commitment to national development for over three decades.

“You are a proud daughter of the soil who is renowned for her principled stance on social justice and democratic governance and have used your profession for promoting same.

“You have lived most of your life standing against injustices and human rights abuses; a course you pursue as an author and columnist on different platforms,” a citation in her honour read.

The former GJA President was lauded for her display of courage on sensitive national issues, which the MEF said was a definition of class statesmanship and patriotism in nation-building.

“No wonder you won the one and only John Kogblenu Award for Valour from the GJA, and also given special mention in the 2004 National Reconciliation Commission Report for taking a bold stance in condemning the 1979 executions and other human rights violations,” the citation noted.

“As a journalist and author whose creative writings continue to excite both young and old minds alike on many social and democratic issues, you stand tall on our radar to receive this award,” the MEF observed.

The Awards, which is organized once every five years, is reserved for individuals and organizations with the highest positive impact on humanity rather than just personal achievements.

The MEF’s laureates are people who have enhanced the wellbeing of their community or nation in a significant way either in the course of their jobs or lives.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in an address, lauded the award winners for their unwavering commitment to the pursuit of their goals.

“The Foundation understands that neither these glass mementos they take home today nor the panache of this event is commensurate with the honour the laureates deserve.

“But by recognizing them here today, we all ought to be reminded that no goal is beyond our reach if our determination to succeed is relentless,” the President stated.
He observed that Africans benefiting from their resources would require selfless leadership, peace, stability and the extrication of “our subjugated minds to stand up and reach for greater heights.”

President Akufo-Addo commended the event organizers for the noble cause, saying “true heroes live by example and put integrity before personal gain by doing the right thing when nobody is watching.”

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, said the MEF with the advent of the Awards, was playing a positive role in promoting the quest for high achievements at all levels of the society.

“The Foundation is helping to inspire new generations to strive harder for excellence. That, without that, is worthy of every effort,” the king remarked.

The programme saw a cross-section of individuals of varied professional backgrounds receiving awards for distinguishing themselves in their fields of endeavour.

Fertilizer scarcity; farmers fear for post-harvest losses in Upper East Region

0

Farmers in the Upper East Region have begun counting their losses due to scarcity of fertilizer coupled with a hike in prices.

For almost two weeks now since the beginning of July 2021, farmers are struggling to find the government’s planting for Food and Jobs fertilizers to apply their crops.

The situation however is making farmers start concluding that this year’s season would not be a good one and could experience post-harvest losses.

Comparing last year to this year, the farmers say is a nightmare as this year has already revealed that there is no future in farming and for them as farmers.

Speaking on Day Break Upper East show on A1 Radio, Reverend John Akaribo of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana said the situation has put fear and panic among their members as some could not even get a single bag of fertilizer to apply their farms.

There is no blessed day that you would not see a trailer loaded with fertilizers passing through the road but the question is where did they normally offload them, he asked.

He added, “We do not know how but we are having many worries that some of us will not make a grain this year”.

Shifting from chemical to organic farming, Rev. Akaribo said will be the way to go as pleasant farmers as the season and times are not promising to them.

Mr Atulik Daniel, Secretary to the Builsa Commercial Rice Farmers Association also noted that majority of their members are in a dilemma as they could not get fertilizers to buy despite having the money.

He added that they have made contacts with authorities that matter but little information and assurance have been given as feedbacks.

Mr Atulik however called on the government to intervene to prevent them from experiencing post-harvest losses.

Mr Francis Ennor who is Upper East Regional Director of Agriculture under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture has assured the farmers of better days ahead.

He promised the farmers that within two weeks they will start receiving the number of fertilizers they dare need as he has made consultations with authorities as well as some of the input dealers.

Mr Ennor however explained that the price adjustment came as a result of some external factors hence farmers should bear with the input dealers.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga has said that he has filed an urgent question on the floor of Parliament on Friday, 16 July 2021 asking the Agric Minister to explain the predicament of the farmers.

He noted that Parliament ought to investigate the subsidy programme to find out what has been the pricing arrangement and payment regime.

Hearts of Oak lift league trophy at Sogakope despite defeat

0

Hearts of Oak’s poor record at WAFA continued as the champions suffered a 1-0 defeat courtesy a free kick from Atte Youssifou.

Hearts had failed to win in Sogakope in their last four tries with the standout result being a 5-0 loss in 2017.

The mood was different this time as the Phobians arrived at Sogakope to massive celebrations and received a guard of honor from the WAFA players.

WAFA then went ahead to honor the champions by presenting them flowers ahead of kick-off.

Hearts of Oak came close through in-form Daniel Barnieh but he missed his chance.

Youssifou stepped up halfway through the second half to bury a direct free kick to give WAFA the lead.

The Sogakope-based club defended well and held on to their lead to end the season on a high.

Hearts champions but more room for improvement

After Hearts of Oak beat Asante Kotoko with three games left to play, head coach Samuel Boadu played down any celebrations.

He said: “We have to respect our last three opponents. We will try to get all the nine points.”

Boadu will be the first to admit that his side’s level of performance and intensity has reduced in recent times.

The Phobians dropped seven points in their last three games and will be thankful to Kotoko, whose form was similarly poor.

Hearts of Oak needed just two wins from their last three games but they ended up with none, drawing two and losing one.

Perhaps, one might make the case of levels dropping after securing their 21st league title.

However, Boadu is a perfectionist who will be trying to figure out why his team dropped so many points in their last three games.

Especially with next season’s CAF Champions League in mind.

WAFA join elite group after finishing third

Despite all their early season struggles, WAFA have steadily improved throughout the season.

At a point, the Academy Boys were hovering just above the relegation zone.

Hearts of Oak lift league trophy at Sogakope despite defeat

The board kept faith in head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum and they have been repaid.

WAFA finishing third ahead of Aduana Stars and Medeama, and take home GHC 80,000 plus 40 bronze medals.
